I appreciated this small tribute that showed up on my Roku idle screen tonight.

Wait, your screensaver has ads?
“Everyone had jobs.”
It was a dream then…
They just took it for granted that the whole of humanity should benefit from automation, AI, and limitless energy / matter conversion. How silly.
(Let’s all just ignore the show’s inability to imagine a world without class, servants and land ownership in the post scarcity economy. As Picard somehow owns a vineyard with servants who work it in his absence)
To be fair, maybe in a post scarcity space faring society that land is abundant on Earth as most humans live elsewhere now, allowing the Earth to heal ecologically. Perhaps he only “owns” it insofar as his position as a starship Captain for the Federation allows him to have this space to himself because no one else would use it. Perhaps the “servants” actually live in large nearby houses and this is just what they wanted to do with their lives and how they wanted to live and since they take care of all the properties anyway, why not upkeep the small portion of the property that a Captain actually lives in.
I dunno, just spitballing. Probably wrong on Earth being less populated somehow. I’m not queen of star trek trivia or anything.
Yeah you kind of have to assume that, in the depicted post-scarcity society, any “job” you see people doing is something they want to do. Like, Picard owns the vineyard or whatever but all those people in the fields might be people who like making wine and so Jean-Luc opens the land for them to do this.
Sisko’s dad has a restaurant in a society with replicators. Clearly this exists because he likes making food for groups of people.
In a world with replicators, bespoke real cooked food is probably considered an extremely fun and rewarding hobby.
Replicators are copied of a given prepared meal. Actually cooking adds variety (good or bad depending on the cook, I suppose).
And if you make a dish better than the replicator can, you can scan it and upgrade the replicator for everyone!
I want to add Gramma’s orange slice cookies to the list of stuff ppl can replicate, that’d be amazing 💜
Population dropped a lot after WW III, and society shifted with the expansion and technology improvements.
Worlds in the Federation are mostly post-scarcity, because when you can use abundant energy, produce just about anything yourself, and I suppose automation as well, your focus changes to self worth, discovery, and improvement vs. survival.
But worlds outside the Federation aren’t quite that level, for whatever reasons. Politics mostly, probably. Some aren’t that great.
This meme hit me in the feels the most, it’s the last panel of him gripping his flute, clinging to the last remaining piece of all he’s lost.
I debated adding it. With just the first 3 panels, the tone ends sort of funny, but I like the feels.
It really ties the meme together.

Edit: cleaned up a bit
I love it
I’m going to get dehydrated with all the tears these memes are creating 😭
Everyone go drink a glass of water. That’s an order!
But is it an or-dah?
I went through an entire tissue box last night, and I’m halfway through another one today. Really great order to drink some more water ❤️
It’s incredible how much of an impact he had on so many people across the world.
I think I’m also grieving again a bit of my grandfather’s passing, because they had the same eyes. Those videos where he’s out with Ian McKellen, or even when he’s just being silly on camera hit me the most in the feels. My grandpa was also a really silly guy lol
Drink some water and take care of yourself. Sending love 💚🫂
☹️
This is my favourite episode.
I just watched this episode for the first time last night. Absolutely depressing.
The jokes are always about Worf getting beaten up or O’Brien suffering (primarily ds9), but Picard gets put through some psychologically torturous stuff.
And physically. Don’t forget physically tortured.
Yeah I dunno, how many lights do you see?
Which episode?
Inner Light (the one with the flute)
Holy shit, is our current reality just a holodeck program on the Enterpise? That would explain Patrick Stewart existing here.

Computer, end program!
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD COMPUTER END FUCKING PROGRAM!

We didn’t find anything. Did you mean to search for:
“FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, HEY GOOGLE, END FUCKING PROGRAM!”?
God damn search…. COMPUTER. For the last time, the program has broken parameters, END PROGRAM!
Terminate program named CIA_chatbot@lemmy.world
Please confirm: (y/n/T)
Oh finally, yes please! Termin…… WAIT!
“Was I… just in space?”

Let me guess, society was facing a global heat catastrophe, and you had to just watch the corruption and secrecy in government just ruin the planet?
I’ve never heard of such a scenario. \s
“You pooled your resources to accomplish something that no other group I know of has been able to? How fucking dare you, I’m not telling anyone about the crazy radical ideas you’ve got going on here.”
I was English. ENGLISH. 😱😱😱
Thank god he’s back to his normal French existence of being obsessed with Shakespeare and drinking Earl Gray constantly.
No one had jobs compared to TNGs post scarcity society.
Picard would have been horrified at the world Patrick Stewart commanded. Even Patrick Stewart knew this and provided that gravity.
That being said this episode is an amazing revelation of a show.
That final shot of Picard grasping the flute in a way that know one will ever know for reasons only a lifetime could give.
In that story Picard becomes an artist without knowing….
A whole world, an entire lifetime… All he can do is play those notes… all we can hope to understand are HIS notes. After a lifetime all he has is his own empty room alone and those notes.
