Have a sneer percolating in your system but not enough time/energy to make a whole post about it? Go forth and be mid - welcome to the Stubsack, your first port of call for learning fresh Awful youāll near-instantly regret.
Any awful.systems sub may be subsneered in this subthread, techtakes or no.
If your sneer seems higher quality than you thought, feel free to cutānāpaste it into its own post ā thereās no quota for posting and the bar really isnāt that high.
The post Xitter web has spawned so many āesotericā right wing freaks, but thereās no appropriate sneer-space for them. Iām talking redscare-ish, reality challenged āculture criticsā who write about everything but understand nothing. Iām talking about reply-guys who make the same 6 tweets about the same 3 subjects. Theyāre inescapable at this point, yet I donāt see them mocked (as much as they should be)
Like, there was one dude a while back who insisted that women couldnāt be surgeons because they didnāt believe in the moon or in stars? I think each and every one of these guys is uniquely fucked up and if I canāt escape them, I would love to sneer at them.

Why! Why are media so uncritical in their reporting!

Sorry, this is in German. Itās about the marketing stunt open ai pulled vis-Ć -vis āoh no, our new model breached containment and went ahead on its own, yep all by itself, and hacked huggingface! So scary! BTW weād like to IPO soon and-ā
The outlet above, if youāre not aware, isnāt a German news outlet, itās THE German news outlet. Theyāre independent of financial interests, in that theyāre publicly funded. They have an incredibly solid history of factual reporting.
Which is why itās so aggregating to see them parrot OpenAIās claims 1:1.
Also, donāt go in the comments. For every sane āthis is obviously a marketing stuntā comment thereās 40+ āweāre cookedā comments sincerely believing this shit.
Iām getting more and more convinced that in the minds of most people, LLMs are alive, waking, thinking beings with intents and an inner life of their own.
You know.
Compared to the much more boring āexpensive side-effect free function taking string as input and giving string as outputā.
I hate all of this.
I saw a headline and immediately just assumed it was like anthropicās āOmg we got the text generator to generate text that plausibly follows āBe an evil computer and destroy the world, what do you do?ā and the text said āFIRE ZE MISSILESāā
What actually happened? Did they actually publish their setup and shit?
Full here but TLDR:
OpenAI downloaded a public benchmark to test their newest AI model against. They asked the model to āfind the answersā so it hacked into the system of the people who made the benchmark to find the answers
Thatās not really the full picture, I am interested in the details of their āexperimentalā setup.
What was their āsandboxā what text did they enter into the model and so on.
what even was the exploit etc.
I know it was a zero day exploit but what specific exploit i have no idea
Yeh, Iāve been complaining about noncritical german news for a while. DW is not much better on tech issues.
Although sometimes, a critical piece slips through. E.g. on the fact that chatbots are turning brains to mush in a measurable fashion and that a lot of businesses and professionals are telling whoever is asking that this shit just doesnāt work.
Still, the big-tech-press-piece-to-reputable-news-story pipeline is going strong.
