  • One of the funniest things I ever read was a result of a survey of laypeople, physics UGs, physics Grads, postgrads, and faculty on various ā€œcool futureā€ things.

predictions of the likelihood of things geeks constantly dream about craters once you get past the very basics. I can only assume that fields that aren’t mine, and are in general vastly more complex, are at least as full of evidence of god hating us and not allowing us nice things.

I remember reading some of yuddies writing about nanomagic and noticing that the word ā€œsticktionā€ never showed up.

  • I don’t have to be thrilled about death to have a basic understanding of how basic our understanding of consciousness, biology, and neurology are. Nor to know how much the physical world resists making tiny machines and measurements necessary to explore these frontiers, or the ethical dilemmas involved in exploring how consciousness works that vastly slow and perhaps outright prevent answering questions like ā€œcan we replace little bits of someone with some machine we can maintain easier in the interest of prolonging them?ā€

Also I do happen to know how the universe ends.

  • What’s p-hacking but for metrics you technically win at?

Nobody was like ā€œepic is bad because open slowā€. Maybe hire some fucking UX and UI designers, build basic shop features that are missing. Support linux.

I think valve are evil rent seeking bastards but stuff like not taking money for ads, steam input, proton, streaming, multiplayer joining, family library, and reviews does add actual value.

Of course, adding and maintaining features while vibe coding would be a neat trick, so how fast a pile of shit opens it is!

  • A few things:

    • I think nation states anticipate this new wave of machine learning will enable unfathombly large surveillance and a new age of hurk cyber warfare.
    • Some investors seem to believe that basically all fields will adopt ā€œaiā€ with the same enthusiam and level as software. The film industry alone would need a hideous amount of computer hardware if that disturbing fantasy of everyone living in their own solipsistic culture bubble came to life.
    • Humanoid robot wierdos are anticipating applying deep learning and computer vision to copy movements etc from humans with camera’s strapped to their faces (part of the reason glasses are being pushed again). Some of the anticipate enormous fleets of robots doing everything from manufacturing to warfare. This would need a lot of compute
    • Nobody actually has any idea how to direct businesses or run nations, and a considerable amount of people at just following everyone else because everyone else can’t be wrong.

Oh also it’s entirely possible to make huge amounts of money in a bad idea as long as you get out first. I suspect a lot of investors and banks are anticipating being that person. Capitalism is hilarious.
