Latest outburst comes as his push to rebrand the emerging technology increasingly falls flat

Donald Trump on Thursday opened up a new front in his ongoing war against commonly used terms and geographic names by warning that anyone referring to Large Language Models such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Anthropic’s Claude as ā€œArtificial Intelligenceā€ would earn themselves a place on his enemies list.

Writing on Truth Social, he declared that the White House ā€œconsiders anyone that uses the term, ā€˜Artificial Intelligence,’ as opposed to the highly accepted new and more accurate term, ā€˜Super Intelligence,’ THE ENEMY!ā€

The president’s outburst-cum-veiled threat landed just over a week after he signed an executive order directing executive branch agencies to begin referring to artificial intelligence, which is now embedded across the federal government, as ā€œsuper intelligenceā€ following a lunch with leaders in the AI industry, including Elon Musk, Sundar Pichai, Dario Amodei and others.

I like to just call them by what they do. Image generation model, text to speech model, word guessing engine. All of these things are within the computational field called ā€œartificial intelligence,ā€ but not a one of them contains a lick of actual intelligence. Now that people outside computational academics are exposed to the term, I don’t want to confuse them into thinking intelligence has been achieved. It’s just an aspirational name, and folks are confused enough already.
