Want to wade into the sandy, spooky surf of the abyss? Have a sneer percolating in your system but not enough time/energy to make a whole post about it? Go forth and be mid: Welcome to the Stubsack, your first port of call for learning fresh Awful youāll near-instantly regret.
Any awful.systems sub may be subsneered in this subthread, techtakes or no.
If your sneer seems higher quality than you thought, feel free to cutānāpaste it into its own post ā thereās no quota for posting and the bar really isnāt that high.
The post Xitter web has spawned soo many āesotericā right wing freaks, but thereās no appropriate sneer-space for them. Iām talking redscare-ish, reality challenged āculture criticsā who write about everything but understand nothing. Iām talking about reply-guys who make the same 6 tweets about the same 3 subjects. Theyāre inescapable at this point, yet I donāt see them mocked (as much as they should be)
Like, there was one dude a while back who insisted that women couldnāt be surgeons because they didnāt believe in the moon or in stars? I think each and every one of these guys is uniquely fucked up and if I canāt escape them, I would love to sneer at them.
(Credit and/or blame to David Gerard for starting this. The spooks are well underway.)

This is such a dumb take because itās wrong in both directions.
Either LLMs are really bad and shouldnāt be trusted to write code and by trusting them youāre going to utterly fail. Or LLMs are actually good enough to write code, but then theyāll also be good enough to design/architect anything you could and reduce your laborās value to zero (e.g. someone will create a harness that lets the business guys TRULY prompt whatever they want into existence). The only situation where this works out for labor is if LLMs end up frozen in some middle ground where they donāt get any more capable.
This idea that the LLM is analogous to a camera is such an insipid, thought-terminating clichƩ.
Its completely wrong, too - the cameraās invention didnāt render painting obsolete like he implies. The only way youād come to that conclusion is if youāre utterly devoid of creativity and artistic insight.
Iris suggested āprevent[ing] people from studying software development and only software developmentā in her article. I fully endorse that idea - at the bare minimum, itād hopefully reduce the number of dipshits like this guy.

You might be onto something here
I vaguely recall once arguing that an arts education should be mandatory for all students. Honestly, that would probably solve a lot of problems in society.
Maybe if we banned teaching MBAs altogether alongside itā¦
I think the advent of photography decimated a particular genre of painting - portraits, but it was still a tail-off. The middle classes could get photo portraits done but they were only B&W and small (a Daguerreotype is basically twice as big as a standard photo print) and still quite expensive. So if you wanted a big color portrait of a loved one, you still had to commission a painting. Same for landscapes.
