Apple TV seems like a good compromise there. It’s relatively cheap(compared to a television) and means you can decide separately between a display with the desired specs and the hardware/OS running it. I’m on my third Apple TV in 14 years(main, secondary, and one retired). Even without support for the latest OS/features they’re usually still useful for a few more years.
The problem with the idea behind Framework devices is you still have to have some standardized interface for components which has to be backwards compatible. Making everything modular means there’s more parts to fail, the device has to be larger to accommodate the modular components, and it costs more to have all the components be modular rather than just manufactured onto a single control board.
