EU lawmakers and member states reached a deal early on Wednesday to implement the bloc’s trade pact with the United States, ending months of wrangling over the accord as President Donald Trump threatened fresh tariffs unless it was approved by July 4. The compromise followed late-night negotiations between EU capitals and parliament negotiators.
According to lawmakers, parliament agreed to scale back its demands – and the final text notably gave the United States until the end of the year to drop surtaxes above 15 percent on steel components, rather than insisting on it as a precondition.
The EU has absolutely no spine. This level of appeasement will only be rewarded with further scorn and disdain.
The politicians and diplomats behind the negotiations MUST know something crucial that simply isn’t surfaced to the public.
I think back then, everyone was afraid the US would cut the military support for Ukraine. But since they are now cutting it anyway and are pulling troops from Europe I think this is not relevant anymore. I do not see any benefits left.

Some time ago I was hiring using some European funding. I got this very good Iranian candidate. There was no way to hire him as the US forced the EU not to allow hiring Iranians with European funding.
I am usually very much pro-EU, since I think it is the best project that ever evolved on this continent. But in some cases, I am deeply ashamed of my European supergovernment. This is one of them.
Can someone with more knowledge tell me If there is some hidden strategy?
I won’t claim to have more knowledge than you, just more optimism. Let’s stick to the car example and say you’re a European looking to buy a car. You can choose between a petrol-guzzling American-made monster of a car and a reasonably efficient European-made ICE car or EV. Even if I “sweeten the deal” for you by slashing import tariffs, making the American car a little cheaper, you’re not a complete buffoon (unlike the American President). You know that whatever you “saved” on your initial purchase will be eaten up by European petrol prices in no time - particularly if the orange moron destabilises even more oil-producing regions. So you’re not going to buy the American-made car, 0% tariff be damned.
This might have been what the EU negotiators went with: “Let’s give the idiot the larger number if it makes him happy. It will have little to no effect.”
Does anyone know whether the mutual acceptance of each others vehicle standards is still part of this agreement?
Back in August / September there was reporting that, as part of the trade deal, both parties would “accept and mutually recognise each others norms for cars” and that “the agreement voices a desire to align vehicle standards”
I really do not want those massive American death-machines on European roads. It would undo decades of work making European roads safer.

As part of the trade agreement, Europe requires America to honour and implement their part of the agreement as well. If Trump starts raising tariffs again that would be a clear breach of the trade agreement, and Europe no longer has an obligation to honour their end of the deal either.
There is also an expiration date in the trade agreement for 2029, if I’m understanding correctly

Maybe that’s the idea here: Trump will break the deal anyway, so it doesn’t really matter what it says.
