PALO ALTO, CA - Tech industry billionaire Jared Banks recently dismissed fears over artificial intelligence disrupting the labor market by insisting that AI is "just a tool", while also himself being a massive tool.
It’s a tool for sure. But it’s like if you had a magic toolbox that contained any tool you could want. But every time you pull out a tool there is a high probability that the tool will be broken, rusty, or just be the completely wrong tool.
But it’s a magic toolbox! So, you spend a lot of time trying to get the right tool. But you also have to dump a gallon of water in the box every time you want a new tool, you have to burn massive amounts of electricity and wait for the tool to be “generated”.
But it’s a magic toolbox! Look at it! It’s generating tools!
Meanwhile the person with a standard toolbox has already finished the job. But they don’t have a magic toolbox!
I feel like AI hype is literally just our monkey brains being impressed with what seems like a magic trick. Even if the magic trick is just giving us broken tools.
We see so much “potential” in the magic toolbox if we could just have it generate tools a little better or a little faster. But have no idea how we can actually do that; or if it’s even possible.
