US authorities have turned to Europe for help with the country’s severe egg shortage. The shortfall is due to bird flu, which has plagued the United States for several years.

The Finnish Poultry Association says it has been contacted about exporting eggs to the US. The organisation’s executive director, Veera Lehtilä, told Yle on Saturday that exporting eggs does not seem to be possible at the moment because no market access negotiations have been held with US authorities. This can be a drawn-out process involving extensive inspections and studies.

Good. We need to feel pain so we don’t keep electing fascists.

Meanwhile, I know someone who keeps chickens…

Don’t give them any eggs and let them see how destructive the Trump regime really is when completedly isolated from the rest of the world.

I’m personally dealing with this daily working in a grocery in America. They will NEVER EVER understand. It’s impossible. The people who elected Trump refuse reality. Every single one of them is cussing and pissed off and shitting their pants over the eggs, but not a single one of them will ever accept that Trump is making the situation far far worse (like when he caused thousands to die from COVID).

But at least if the entire country collapses like it seems it’s about to, we can finally have a revolution and see him in gallows.

In the meantime I’m just not able to have any eggs. Oh, fun fact also, conservatives made it illegal to own chickens in my city. 🙃

How the fuck is this possible. Can they really control what the fuck you do in your garden?

Ha ha ha, I am jealous of your naivety. Americans will not shut up about freedom and rights but we actually have lost many basic rights other countries don’t think twice about. That being said, this is specifically a city ordinance, not statewide or national. Not that there’s any shortage of equally mental laws that are across the country.

What do you mean illegal to own chickens? What?

As in, they will fine you and tell you that you must get rid of them and if you don’t they will take them from you.

Hahaha, no I get that! I was trying to ask what exactly about owning chickens is illegal. Is it a noise thing, smell? Risk of disease? Are ducks illegal?

            Do they just hate chickens?

Is pretty common here. Neighborhoods and towns enact these rules to protect property values, which are probably the most sacred cow of American politics.

They use pretty much all of the above to justify it, like the other guy said, it’s NIMBY bullshit. Yes ducks are as well. And it’s come up to a vote like 4 times in the last decade but been shot down by conservatives every time.

A lot of people say stuff along the lines of “you can have chickens here as long as you get along with your neighbors”, implying that they won’t call the police/city over it, but unfortunately I live next to an old cranky shithead that thinks Trump is a god. He’s threatened to call the city on us for having slightly long grass, he’ll definitely do it over chickens.

If I had the money I would look into opening something small nearby that isn’t under residential zoning and start raising some, but it’s WAY beyond my means.

I suppose some city politician is a NIMBY arsehole who disliked a neighbour’s chickens making chicken noises.
