To me, it’s more regulating the behaviour of people than regulating the developers of intentionally addictive and intentionally poorly-moderated systems.

The big hegemonic tech platforms, as they currently exist, are not just harmful to adolescents, they’re harmful to society as a whole.

I also don’t enjoy the prospect of how a ban like this might be implemented in terms of age and identity verification, since I expect it’s going look like “hand the data brokers even more of your personal data, they pinky-swear they’ll only use it to comply with the law”.

For sure, they did. Most of the big stuff was started, if not completed, by Conservative administrations.

But Chrétien and Martin continued the process. Air Canada, Petro-Can, and CN Rail were all initiated by Mulroney but completed by Liberal PMs.

My point is, I don’t see the LPC as reliable defenders of public services and I think it’s dangerous to view them as an ally in that context.

Then pharmacare. Then dental care. Then all the rest of healthcare that our strangled system has left to the private market. Then the telecoms. Then public transit.

My problem is that poor governance from the lesser of two evils almost inevitably results in a swing towards the greater of two evils.

It just delays the worst, doesn’t avert it.

We had other options, as uninspiring as they may have been. Now we’re locked into a FPTP two-party death spiral, and both parties bear the responsibility for it; the cons for being unrepentant monsters, and the libs for pandering to the right and to capital at the expense of the best interests of the majority of the electorate when they could and should be choosing policy directions that don’t perpetuate ballooning inequality and the decay of the social safety net.

Carney in particular watched (and to some extent, presided over) decades of just this kind of decline in the UK, he absolutely knows what his policy directives are going to do to this country.

I switched a few months ago, and I’ve honestly been so impressed with how far Blender has come since the last time I tried it (more than 10 years ago, probably).

I don’t work in creative industry anymore and I haven’t had a ton of time to noodle around and actually try out the tools I’ve seen demo’d, but it was mindblowing discovering how many different software suites I had used to do stuff that Blender has been incorporating into their one package.

Maya? Obviously does most of that. ZBrush? Yep, pretty comparable. Marvelous Designer? Holy shit, yep. ToonBoom? Also that.

By far the worst part has just been trying to retrain hotkey muscle memory and learn minor (but fundamental) differences, and that’s not as small a thing as a lot of people make it out to be - it does add a lot of cognitive noise and you really can’t just hop in and flow right from the get go (depending on what you’re doing).

Absolutely worth it to get away from Adobe though, and not having to bounce between programs while working on a model is very, very pleasant.

The challenge is convincing c-suite to greenlight the work.
