CrocodilloBombardino@piefed.socialto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•In the United States, what makes a 'libertarian' right wing?English172·8 days agoSee: <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertarianism#Etymology >
The term “libertarian” was invented by Joseph Dejacque, who was, broadly, a communist who rejected using a centralized state to move society toward communism (this is the opposite of what we now call authoritarian communists, who believe that you have to seize state power first in order to bring about a socialist and then communist society).
in the 1960s Murray Rothbard, a right-wing libertarian, popularized the term to refer to people who want zero or minimal state power and want a sort of hyper-capitalism to run everything by contract. He wrote that he specifically chose to steal the term from the left. This is considered right wing because it will make hierarchical systems, especially capitalism, much more intense and brutal. The state doesn’t usually limit the brutality of capitalism or other hierarchies, but from time to time popular movements have been able to make it do that.
In the US, most people will think you mean the Rothbard definition if you just say “libertarian” and will not really know what a “libertarian socialist” or “left-libertarian” is. American socialists will often have heard all of these terms.

The mental game, especially in martial arts, is a big part of the match. Also it creates buzz and is effective marketing.

CrocodilloBombardino@piefed.socialto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How does a guy become his most confident around women?English3·20 days agoIf the confidence you want is for dating purposes, you need to get comfortable with:
- figuring out what situations you’re comfortable in where single women are present: not one for clubs and bars? What about pickleball or ceramics or a book club? Try new things that have some chance of having people you want to date.
- figuring out what specifically makes you uncomfortable, then facing it. Is it fear of rejection? Fear of being vulnerable? Certain kinds of social situations? Understand that rejection is part of learning and vulnerability is required (in appropriate amounts based on context) to connect.
- don’t hyperfixate on any one woman or one event. Spotted a baddie? Go for it if she seems open to interaction, but don’t make getting her contact info into a make or break for your whole night.
- learn to spot cues and hints that someone is or isn’t into having or continuing an interaction: is she trying to put effort into conversion with you or shutting it down (even politely)?
- Stay a million miles away from the toxic “manosphere” and their incel fuckery. There is nothing of value there.

It’s hard, especially with all the terrible shit we’re seeing. I’m trying to alchemize it into anger and action, but I think everyone struggles with that. I get some boosts from being involved in local work and the community around that.
I don’t get involved in electoral campaigns. Maybe local work would be something you’d gain energy from.
CrocodilloBombardino@piefed.socialto Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•Mamdani appoints top DNC and Obama adviser in bid to secure Democratic Party establishment supportEnglish32·25 days ago-
President and NY Mayor are very different in terms of how much they can be pressured. The right & establishment are fighting, why won’t you?
-
Biden was always a shit, especially on Gaza, so the horizon was different from explicitly demsoc + antizionist Mamdani. Even still, there are pretty major differences between biden and trump on domestic policy.
-
Right now there is a swell of hope and energy on the left bc of the Mamdani campaign – lay the groundwork there to build a durable movement that won’t be demobilized after the election. Get people into mutual aid, ice resistance, abolitionist, etc groups!
Look, no politician is going to embody real change, but we know Cuomo will be a much bigger obstacle. pressuring, as you point out, only goes so far, but you have to start from where you are and develop a movement inch by inch.
It’s psychologically easier to be cynical, but it also helps your enemies win.
