Fuck AI@lemmy.world•Did they enshitificate web search to boost ai?English
6·11 days agoI like to think so.
The entire premise developing agi isn’t about a “new scientific breakthrough” as much as it is a way to surveil and profile people.
with web search, you have the option to opt out of cookies, which basically doesn’t allow trackers to track you on websites. were not even taking into account adblockers such as UblockOrigin or privacy badger, which has been an ongoing war with big tech.
Anyways, with LLM’s, they have control of your prompts, they have access to your account and they can target advertisements or sell your data to the highest bidder.
So, when google announced that search will be depreciated and replaced with their Gemini AGI, that to me was the first real indicator that their intentionally making search shitty to boost usage of their AI.

61·12 days agoon a abstract level, he is correct, using AI has the same effect as drinking alcohol which has the same effect of doing meth.
the people who use AI, if it were to all be taken away, would have the same problems (on an abstract level) as say a recovering alcoholic. As for those who haven’t relied on it as much, you could think of it as a temporary blackout.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Arch Linux AUR Under Another Wave Of Malicious Packages, Package Adoptions HaltedEnglish
1·14 days agoit’s not managing, as you seem to imply, it’s just hosting.
Arch hosts the AUR repository, the maintenance of the packages is on the developers who developed the package.
If someone sneaks in spyware or malware inside the makepkg, that isn’t arch’s fault, that’s the maintainers fault of the makepkg.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Arch Linux AUR Under Another Wave Of Malicious Packages, Package Adoptions HaltedEnglish
1·14 days agomore importantly, they don’t recommend that users use the AUR repository (that isn’t to say they are opposed to it). Some advice they have given is to review what the dependencies are before executing the package with an AUR helper or manually.
Just to make a point, there is a surplus of these non officially supported (from OS developers) repositories, such as the terra repository for fedora. It has the same vulnerability as AUR, and yet that is targeted for new users.
Much like how fedora doesn’t officially support Terra, arch doesn’t support AUR. There is a reason why it’s called AUR (arch user repository) over ASR (arch supported repository). AUR entails that it is not supported by arch.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Male ejaculation travels at an avg speed of 28 mph. How come it doesn't blow the back of a woman or male neck out or cause other serious damage at that speed?English
1·16 days agoI mean were talking about skin and tissue it will bend and stretch when it comes in contact to pressure. Also energy depends on mass not just velocity/speed. It would need to have a large enough energy while being precise enough to not be distributed over a surface to penetrate and damage tissue.
do you know why bullets penetrate tissue, its because it has a large enough kinetic energy fixated on a very small region of area. Similarly light that is emitted by a radioactive source penetrate and damage skin cells from the same principles.
whether it’s good or bad publicity, its still publicity. Companies strive for publicity, if anything defacating on it just adds monetary value.
there’s always going to be some individual who finds the advertisement appealing or just looks up the website of the advertisement

Linux@lemmy.ml•Framework Laptop 13 Pro: Aiming To Be One Of The Best Upgradeable Linux Laptops Review - PhoronixEnglish
22·21 days agomy point is whether it is fatigued or it stopped working as a result of a large enough electrical impedance. You would have replaced the motherboard either way because of 10 other motherboard/component failures. in which case, buy a new laptop.
thinkpads are rapidly depreciative. They approximately depreciate linearly compared to a theoretically and practically non-depreciative product. The longer they are used (or just held in stock), the cheaper they become. I’ve found used thinkpads that are worth the same amount for same spec’d framework motherboards. until integrated circuits become cheaper your just purchasing a more expensive thinkpad that’s easier to understand for the user.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Framework Laptop 13 Pro: Aiming To Be One Of The Best Upgradeable Linux Laptops Review - PhoronixEnglish
31·21 days agoI mean, sure, but there needs to be a port the framework modules connect to. the framework uses the same, soldiered down, USB-C connection for the adapters to connect to. So the same issue arises as with a thinkpad and every other laptop.
motherboards generally limit the amount of voltage that you can get from the power supply, generally that’s 20V. if that component is broken or fully degraded, your best bet is to buy another laptop.
that said, try updating the BIOS if it hasn’t been updated recently. It sounds like this is a low-level controller issue then an actual hardware issue.
just go used on ebay, and if you prefer to do a project, buy a “broken” laptop in some area, and you can save 30% from retail cost. I bought an Asus zephyrus g14 (2023) for $500 because the n-key didn’t work, once after updating the bios I had a perfectly functional $1000 to $1500 laptop (if I wanted to resell).

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•Google just had its first negative cash flow quarter due to massive "AI" spendingEnglish
8·24 days agoyour young self was right. the inventors of pagerank are pretty fucking cool, they also made an entire book on it, technology back then wasn’t just smoke and mirrors if you understood linear algebra. Main note: they were employees of google.
Tech companies did cool shit when it wasn’t about collecting data and profiling users. now they’re ruthless scums trying to find by any means how to capitalize off of you.

if your trying to find an OS that is low on resources, there’s only one option: alpine linux. Yes it starts out as a TTY (no graphical environment) but they do have scripts to install the OS and a graphics environment of your choice.
the one concern is driver support, generally (unless using a popular distro such as zorin OS) driver support for Chromebooks are limited. I’ve tried getting alpine Linux on my Chromebook and can’t because the wifi card would not work for it.
that said, if you’re ready to manually configure driver support for it (which most likely will happen) the artix OS uses about 128 MB of memory. That said, if you have more, Linux will dynamically allocate more for core OS functionality

Linux@lemmy.ml•Is there a reason to pick Fedora over Ubuntu?English
2·30 days agoIf you are comfortable using fedora or if you are fine learning about fedora, use fedora.
I personally wouldn’t use Ubuntu with it’s recent controversy in specific the “explicit AI features” planned to be implemented within ubuntu. I’d suggest avoiding it out of privacy concerns even if it runs locally on your system.
the general trend for AI adoption, is to make it accessible for anyone to onboard, and then slowly control the users by (for example) making users connect to their servers to use their chatbot which then they can train, and have a better profile of you.
Canonical never mentioned that, in fact they mentioned quite the inverse. but any implementation of an AI chatbot, Tech companies aren’t doing it because of how revolutionary AI is. The AI is the product and your data is what they want.
I’m not saying canonical is pursuing that initiative, but that’s generally how it goes for most tech companies. Don’t take my word for it, ask yourself, “what service does Ubuntu provide? what financial backing (sponsorships) do they have?” I’ve looked far and wide and the only thing I’ve found is, they offer a free OS install as their consumer grade product, and a subscription service to their enterprise network that is clearly not a sustainable business model (from an engineering perspective) for a multi-thousand employee company.

13·1 month agoI’ve been thinking about AI in the workspace recently, these companies are implementing AI into everything despite our comments to remove it. that got me thinking, the US is currently in an economic bubble on an empty promise that AI will someday be relevant. It clearly isn’t benefiting society as of late, so they encourage workspaces to use it and to continue hoisting the stock market by it’s propaganda (that it is relevant).
Because workspaces know the US is in deep shit right now, and so you know what’s worse than delivering shitty software, an economic crash.
don’t put this on yourself, preserve the shitty code reviews while the US goes through an identity crisis. Investors will inevitably come to the realization that it isn’t sustainable.
yea, just because you prompt “noAI” doesn’t mean it won’t be sneaking into your results. I’ve even found shitty AI generated articles like from geekstogeeks sneaking inside marginalia search. which is just a query database of websites, no recommendation algorithm.
Search engines have gone to shit, your only path for reliable information is wikipedia.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Void users, what do you especially like about your distro?English
4·2 months agoi’ve used both void and alpine before switching back to arch. Alpine is great, but it doesn’t support glibc and that compatibility gave me issues installing applications on my laptop. Sure I could setup chroot or a contanarized environment but void offered both options glibc and musl.

the things you are describing is mentioned a lot when people treat agi as a friend.
when I have used it, it does use that comforting language a lot, aggreeing with your points to stroke your ego. if I were to describe it’s persona with a character, it would have to be Mr Jelly Bean from Rick and Morty.
I can see the appeal, but holy shit I’m getting pervert vibes from it.
