  • Have you considered that DINK and non traditional families also have multiple motivations and are multi-faceted individuals? I would never condemn anyone for having children but I am sad for children being given a bad life they didn’t choose by parents who knew better. I’m more of the mind that should I want children, I will probably end up adopting or fostering one day, but I am not compelled to breed or to spread some bloodline legacy when there are more than enough unloved and suffering children in the world — but even then I have qualms with the ethical implications of a society that takes children from poor families it refuses to provide for and pays others to raise (however poorly) those same kids whose mothers were deemed undeserving of that same social welfare.

You call me a doomer and anti-natalist, but you agree with how shitty everything is so what’s the issue? That I’m realistic about it and not relentlessly optimistic that life will find a way so I should just cheer up about it? Is it anti-natalist to believe we have a resources and population issue and that declining birth rates, however bad for an economy, can only be a longer term boon for the sum total of our species’ destructive capability? I don’t hate children, but I don’t feel qualified to make a better world for them and that grieves me. People are supposed to want their children to prosper, to live a better life, and if I can’t imagine that possibility, my personal ethos is that I shouldn’t create a living being that gets to watch what’s coming play out.

I am depressed. It’s depressing. Everyone is depressed. Therapy only does so much, but my problems are only internal insofar as I choose to look at the world without blinding myself to very real problems. Sure, I could chipper up if I choose to be ignorant and delusional about everything, but that’s not who I am and never has been. Whatever soft-genocide or economically-driven eugenics you think I support because I am fearful for the poor and what their children will suffer, since they will always suffer the most, I can tell you that I would rather these marginalized groups had access to thorough sex education and safe birth control options because historically it has only helped those communities, both economically and socially. If you disagree with that despite factual evidence in cases like quantifiable improvements in marginalized communities a generation after Roe v Wade was decided, then you ignore reality to create an enemy that doesn’t exist, while trivializing real issues.

  • I can’t help it. I’m glad to be infertile. Children born right now would inevitably face the extreme results of a climate crisis, depleting fresh water stores, the global sociopolitical breakdown currently happening in favor of far right fascists funded by billionaires, and everything that comes with that.

I feel we are past the point of no return and am confident that I will probably die before the absolute worst of it, but my generation’s children would not. I have never been more afraid for children in my life, and there are many in my own little village. I just do not and cannot foresee a future where this gets better, with as powerless as we are against surveillance and military technology. As nihilistic as it sounds, we are speedrunning extinction and the guard rails are gone. I do not want to see children suffer for it, and especially not my own.

  • Same.

The first hides 80% of the time only to emerge screaming for wet food or to pet you specifically on her time and only if you are placed in one of her 3 pre-approved human petting zones.

The second would treat being thrown down a set of stairs as a fun game and immediately run back to being in your face on the off chance he might get a crumb of attention.

  • It was my thought that the produce, meat, and staples seemed to be the bargains people were talking about, not the processed stuff. But yeah, the produce section disgusted me so much I just wouldn’t go back. Bags and bags of rotting garlic, soft onions, bruised and spoiling fruit and veg — I just was like “nope,” went to the only employee I could find in the store at checkout and let them know their produce section had a lot of spoiled product, put my cart back, and left

  • We all participate in unethical business, however far removed our choices may seem from it. I’m not part of the military, don’t endorse it, and am angry about how my taxes are spent on it. It’s our government and military leadership that causes these problems and should be derided though. A lot of these sailors probably joined the military fresh out of high school with nothing better out there for them and aren’t educated enough to realize they’re not doing anything good. They’re kids though, but ride your moral high ground. I’m sure you’ve never worked for a scummy corporation or consumed slave labor goods.

  • I just think willfully ignoring the fact that there’s systemic pressure that coerces the lower class into the military and then saying they deserve to be starved and sent off to their deaths in pointless war is a fucking wildly dickish perspective. Like you assume they chose to be in the military as one of many lucrative options and not as the only prospective chance to better themselves (however false the illusion is)
