I feel gig work locks you into a cycle of poverty and dependence. It’s not transferable experience and it usually locks you into car ownership. Not sustainable for getting into the workforce.

Lots of people end up on welfare and in social housing under similar situations. We stigmatize those people so much that it never enters public discourse in the same way.
People who are unhoused tend to have even more severe difficulties resulting in that situation.

Whatever, it’s a better retcon than everything J.K.Rowling said about Harry Potter.
The Matrix having a bunch of trans themes > Dumbledore having a throbbing gay sex backstory and the 1 jewish student being named Goldstein.
The Matrix actually supports those themes and readings within the work.

science@lemmy.world•France’s nuclear fleet gives it one of the world’s lowest-carbon electricity gridsEnglish
2·5 days agoAll renewables are subject to some kind of weather impacts. A challenge with the grid is adapting to spikes in demand like if it’s really cold or hot one day in particular. You cant turn up the sun or wind on demand.
We’ve been having brown outs in Canada for the first time ever in the last few years. Its crazy to imagine since our electricity is so abundant. Same with France struggling with this heat wave.

9·5 days agoIn general, any large vehicle like a pickup truck, will do horrific damage to animals (or people). It has far more to do with speed and weight, than the “hardness” or “sharpness” of the materials used. Crumple zones are more there to protect the occupants than whatever they hit.
High speed car accidents and roadkill are some of the most violent injuries one can witness.

4·5 days agoIt shows the importance of diversifying energy production. In Quebec it’s all hydro, but sometimes the weather means the reservoirs can get low over the years. It affects production in a serious way and can take time to build up again.
Wind and solar are also affected by weather patterns in their own ways. Maybe less so or at least maybe different factors. Hedging and balancing grid production is going to be a new challenge.
Fossil fuels did have the advantage of being pretty easy to ramp up or down, whenever, for whatever reason. Some countries might want to keep around older but very efficient fossil fuel plants as backups for these kinds of events. That or waste incineration for example.

91·11 days agoMy advice for dating has always been: focus on making friends first. Meet people from work, sign up for a class, rekindle with old friends, volunteer somewhere. Just make new guy and girl friends, don’t go in looking for anything more.
You start inviting people for stuff, you’ll get invited to stuff. Then other people might show up to, friends of friends, relatives, etc… Such and such might not be into you, but she has a cousin the same age. Or such and such is a cool friend and he has a female best friend he brings along to parties.
Worst case scenario you are single and have a really healthy social life. Then when you least expect it… bam someone falls out from somewhere you never expected. lol

51·12 days agoIt’s just trying to get you engaged to ultimately pay. You can have matches and they’ll be super far in the cue forcing you to buy matches or access to seeing them.
The prices to make the apps functional are incredibly high.
Besides, I don’t think they need to engineer anything to be bad. Dating random people outside your social network and interests is just not a recipe for success. Much easier to date people in the same environment as you: work, school, friend group etc…
Dating apps cant do that. Matching people you kinda know is really weird and awkward lol

Meta is absolutely aware its algo is pushing content from sexual predators for other sexual predators. I’ve been flagging some stuff for months and Meta’s system repeatedly refuses to do anything about it. It’s sickening. I was really close to start letter writing different politicians in my area to get it banned in Canada.
Its genuinely the worst platform I have ever seen in my life. The worse subreddits or 4chan pages were not this blatant.
I don’t think people understand how bad Facebook has gotten. It is full to the brim of criminal activities of all kinds.
