SentientFishbowl@lemmy.mlto Linux@lemmy.ml•Noob Question Thread: Ask Any Questions About Linux!English5·1 year agoIs there a way to assess which packages on my linux distribution aren’t open source? I’m planning on having a secondary machine which is exclusively open source, but not sure how I would go about ensuring that is the case.
SentientFishbowl@lemmy.mlOPto Privacy@lemmy.ml•How secure does your computer user login password need to be and why?English9·1 year agoGreat! This is the kind of answer I’ve been looking for. Thank you.
SentientFishbowl@lemmy.mlOPto Privacy@lemmy.ml•How secure does your computer user login password need to be and why?English3·1 year agoI guess my question is why so? How vulnerable are my devices with a compromised device on the network?
SentientFishbowl@lemmy.mlOPto Privacy@lemmy.ml•How secure does your computer user login password need to be and why?English5·1 year agoNo biometrics! Just wanted to clarify the only difficulties related to typing my password are its length
SentientFishbowl@lemmy.mlOPto Privacy@lemmy.ml•How secure does your computer user login password need to be and why?English5·1 year agoAgreed - the message I was trying to convey is that I use a very secure password, which sacrifices convenience for security - is this necessary though? I have no concerns related to memorising or particular difficulties typing it out as it follows a passphrase structure for the most part.
SentientFishbowl@lemmy.mlOPto Linux@lemmy.ml•Open source PDF viewer with Dual Page feature?English6·1 year agoOkay, after trying a few different options out I think we have a winner :) Firefox suits my needs the best, thanks for the suggestion
SentientFishbowl@lemmy.mlOPto Linux@lemmy.ml•Open source PDF viewer with Dual Page feature?English2·1 year agoI’ll give it a shot and see if it’s compatible. Cheers
SentientFishbowl@lemmy.mlOPto Linux@lemmy.ml•So I installed Arch Linux... Is this it?English5·1 year agoNot too familiar with it, in what way would you consider it better?
SentientFishbowl@lemmy.mlOPto Linux@lemmy.ml•Open source PDF viewer with Dual Page feature?English4·1 year agoMy use case is a pdf of a book which is meant to be read across two pages - wouldn’t work if it’s displaying pages 1 and 2 together instead of pages 2 and 3, if you see what I’m saying. Does Zathura allow for that?
SentientFishbowl@lemmy.mlOPto Linux@lemmy.ml•So I installed Arch Linux... Is this it?English13·1 year agoNot the only meme I fell for… Anyone know the best way to unload 5 thinkpads that originally shipped with Windows 7??
SentientFishbowl@lemmy.mlOPto Linux@lemmy.ml•So I installed Arch Linux... Is this it?English54·1 year agoArch wiki is superb, couldn’t have installed or configured Arch without it.
SentientFishbowl@lemmy.mlOPto Linux@lemmy.ml•So I installed Arch Linux... Is this it?English8·1 year agoMakes sense. Do you find that by having the same install for so long (including transplanting it) that you have accumulated a lot of bloat? One of the things I really enjoyed about a fresh install was that I knew there wasn’t a build-up of digital junk files, but with Arch fresh installing every once in a while just seems impractical.
SentientFishbowl@lemmy.mlOPto Linux@lemmy.ml•So I installed Arch Linux... Is this it?English41·1 year agoIn a way this post is just long-form “I use Arch, btw” 🤯
SentientFishbowl@lemmy.mlOPto Linux@lemmy.ml•So I installed Arch Linux... Is this it?English3·1 year agoBoth :) Manual classic install doesn’t strike me as particularly complicated.
SentientFishbowl@lemmy.mlOPto Privacy@lemmy.ml•What would you consider your threat model?English1·1 year agoOkay, thank you.
SentientFishbowl@lemmy.mlOPto Privacy@lemmy.ml•What would you consider your threat model?English3·1 year agoWould you consider all activists on the same threat level? I was imagining what the Just Stop Oil protesters in the UK might consider their threat model, I’d imagine it would be different to an activist in Iran or Russia for instance. Am I wrong?
SentientFishbowl@lemmy.mlOPto Privacy@lemmy.ml•What would you consider your threat model?English15·1 year agoJeez, that’s terrifying.
SentientFishbowl@lemmy.mlOPto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is it just me or do Lemmy communities tend to skew left wing? Why might this be?English42·1 year agoTo be honest this is why I asked! I came across this platform through a source that I would consider much further right wing than my personal politic views. I was expecting a cesspit, and I was pleasantly surprised to find the opposite :)
I think a lot of the comments have really hit the nail on the head. Never hurts to take a step back and try to detox from the climate of negativity that inundates social media. Go out for a walk, go cycling, touch grass
Anything that is used colloquially but technically isn’t correct because some loser didn’t like it 200 years ago. To boldly keep on splitting infinitives is a rejection of language prescriptivism!
