Macallan@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•It's Father's Day in the United States. What is a memory of your father that left the greatest impact on your life?English9·28 days agoUnfortunately for mine, that stubborn son of a bitch is still hanging around into his 80’s, while the rest of his miserable family had the decent common courtesy to kick it in their 60’s & 70’s. I went no contact about a decade ago, but I still get to hear how much of a piece of shit he is from the rest of the family.
The only positive that came from him is that I turned out to be a better father than he did. I have a good relationship with my nearly adult kids.
Macallan@lemmy.worldto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Your help needed: PhD research on why people choose to self-hostEnglish3·2 months agoI sort of fit that category. I am aware of self-hosting, even somewhat interested. But I know absolutely nothing about it, and if I’m being honest, too lazy to research it.
Truthfully, I haven’t owned my own PC/Laptop in over a decade. I just use the one I get from work if I need to do something on a computer. I preferred gaming on a PS4/5 so I could just relax on the couch with a controller instead of sitting in a chair at a desk. I recently got a steam deck and love it. I want to poke around desktop mode some more so I can get more familiar with Linux.
Macallan@lemmy.worldto Steam Deck@sopuli.xyz•Steam Deck sales still going strong over three years later16·2 months agoJust got mine in the mail a couple of weeks ago. I love it. I haven’t played PC games since I was in high school in the 90’s. My son has one, and my girlfriend’s grandson has one. We’re all connected with family sharing. My daughter is interested in getting one now too.
Side note: Desktop mode is getting me used to Linux and I’m enjoying it. It doesn’t seem as intimidating as I imagined.
Macallan@lemmy.worldto Sync for Lemmy@lemmy.world•Have you reported issues to the developer?English4·3 months agoYup. LJ has pinged in several posts. I sent an email to the address listed in the play store. No response to either.
I remember that too.
Yeah, I’m still using the app and trying to hold out till it’s completely borked. Once it becomes too broken, I’ll end up having to move on.
When are we getting another update?

Appreciate the correction. I’ll remember next time.
Oh man, I loved Slide! It was my go to reddit app for years.
Unfortunately it got so broken I ended up on Sync.
Macallan@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Google Maps blocks Gulf of America reviews after rename criticism3·5 months agoGood luck with that. The Data centers I have been on have more security than many military bases I’ve been on.

The USDA requires eggs to be washed, which removes the natural protective coating. Then they need to be kept cool in a refrigerator.
Over there the eggs aren’t required to be washed so the natural protective coating stays on. No refrigeration needed.
So, when I was in highschool (circa 1996-ish) I couldn’t sleep one night. Decided to walk down to the 7-11. There were a few pinball games in there that I played before, but never really took it seriously. Popped in the quarter and got my ass handed to me. Decided, fuck it, I have nothing better to do at midnight in North Dakota. Popped in another quarter. Ended up hitting the multiplier in the top left corner. This machine was so worn out that I kept pushing the pinball into the multiplier slot. It got stuck and just bounced around there for a while. I eventually lost the ball, but now I knew the secret. Put the ball in the upper left corner. Every game after that I would aim for the upper left corner and it would just stick up there earning points. I eventually got bored at like 2 am and left the machine with like 65 free games from all the points I gathered. Fun as hell.
How is it for Civil work?
I got a 4/28 and got told I would have scored higher if I guessed at random. Ouch. (I am not a dev)
