I probably miss out on that aspect as I have everything automated 🤷
This is @Dave@lemmy.nz and @Dave@piefed.nz but PieFed told me not to use my admin account for general browsing so here I am following instructions.

I probably miss out on that aspect as I have everything automated 🤷

I thought that was the number one rule of reddit? Everyone was acting like they didn’t know what it was.

The two main benefits I’ve seen of private trackers are that you avoid the issue in the OP which happens all the time on public trackers, and that shows download in seconds.
Not sure how helpful they would be if things weren’t automated. I just have things set up so my Jellyfin users can request shows and they get downloaded automatically.
But with that said, “private” doesn’t mean it costs money, just that it requires an account (and usually that is an application process). It means they can kick people off for uploading things they shouldn’t.

Oh on private trackers it’s hard to keep a genuine ratio like that. Instead they typically assign points for time you spend seeding, and you use those points to “buy” upload credit that counts for your ratio.
Many private trackers have a requirement to log in every X months so occasionally I just go log in to each and spend all the points.

This seems like a one off for them, but for me whenever tracking ongoing TV series I would regularly get malicious files as they appear before the real ones, and get found and downloaded by sonarr.
These days I only automate from private trackers, and enable a public tracker for an interactive search only if something can’t be found on the private trackers.

For the most part, something either comes with the system or you install it as a flatpak. Or as someone else mentioned, run in Distrobox.
Therre’s actually a Bazzite help page on this: https://docs.bazzite.gg/Installing_and_Managing_Software/software-intro/
The very last resort is that you can install packages sort of as normal, by layering them in rpm-ostree, then rebooting to rebuild things. It’s discouraged though, as if you manually install packages then it can break updates and upgrades take longer to run. Basically, installing packages manually is defeating the purpose of an immutable system (the purpose being basically to keep things super stable).

They discourage layering on the packages, as that’s how you get conflicts that might break things in future releases.
I tried to run Bazzite as my daily driver but I just couldn’t do it. I probably was not familiar enough with Distrobox, but everything I tried to do had some caveat that meant I couldn’t work it out.
The desktop the kids use runs Bazzite, and I’m pretty close to changing it. Issues with xbox controllers, issues waking from sleep, issues going to sleep to start with. It’s barely used outside of the kids playing games and it still has more issues than I do running Nobara as my main.

I think it’s important to point out (for someone familiar, such as everyone on lemmy obviously) that Bazzite is based on the immutable Fedora Silverblue.
Being immutable makes it apparently stable, but comes with tradeoffs (you are basically limited to flatpaks for installing things, or at least highly discouraged from using other install methods).
If you want a gaming focused distro that is based on the standard Fedora, I can recommend Nobara. Their default version now uses KDE but I use the Gnome version. I think KDE did something recently to make everyone angry but I can’t remember what (AI related maybe?), I use Gnome because I like it.

I’ve recently started Metro 2033 (I don’t think I have played any of the rest of the series).
It’s been fun so far, and is the right age to have some pretty normal keyboard and mouse controls (which can be a problem if you go back too far).

I recently played through it. It was good but I’m not sure how much it was my kind of game. I hate the boss fights when they are way too hard, then you search for help online and they say “just use a melee weapon” and then it’s way too easy. I want a boss that adjusts to my play style, or at least has checkpoints if I die.
I also couldn’t get used to the driving cameras. I just want a camera that is above the car but follows me as I turn. Is that too much to ask 😭

The article said the defrost cycle was trigged which is what heated the fidges to 50C (I was a bit confused at first as to how they could make them heat up past room temp).
I can imagine use cases for remotely controlling the settings in all the fridges across your hundreds of stores, but I suspect there might be a bit more hesitancy to buy the remotely controlled fridges now.

Haha seriously this. There weren’t any coffee people in there to judge.
I literally had a work meeting with someone I’d never met, they asked to meet at Starbucks. Then when I arrived he got up and said “where should we go for coffee?”
3% every year sounds high! I used to donate 3-4 times a year but then had kids and always seem to have some cold or flu. I kept getting screened out, and only do it once every few years at the moment when stars align. I hope to get back to donating regularly when I can.

Sorry, what are you trying to do? Anna’s achive is not selling anything. You can donate to them, and in return they will give you fast downloads from their mirrors. But you are not using their mirrors, you’re using torrents, right?
Like you just literally go to https://annas-archive.gl/dyn/generate_torrents?max_tb=1&format=url
And it will give you a list of torrent files you can download to seed their content as a backup for them, to preserve the knowledge. At no point do you need a membership (not even if you want to download individual files from their servers, you just get slower download speeds which will still have you downloading books in a minute or two).

I am not sure what you mean by DMCA notices but there are hundreds of sites that you can torrent from if you use a VPN yes. My assumption was that you’re already familiar with torrenting.
For the record, Anna’s Archive is not distributing books with the copyright owners consent, they are a shadow library.

You can help hoard the info so the knowledge is not lost. The torrents are not designed to be browsed (you do that on their website) but instead are designed to be a copy to stop it being lost.
To help, follow the link I gave. In the “Help seed” section say how much space you have. It will allocate you appropriately torrents to download and seed.

I don’t think anyone has mentioned this yet, but the idea of AI hacking tools has also led to a lot more human effort in finding and fixing security issues.
A while back there was an article about AI security tools and something about over 200 security vulnerabilities patched (perhaps in Chrome?). But in the detail of the article, it mentioned only 4 were found by AI. The rest were found by humans trying to get there before people with AI tools found them.

What is your intent?
If you want to help preserve, you can help Anna’s Archive by seeding torrents: https://annas-archive.gl/torrents
Last week I was drinking rum and rasberry flavoured pepsimax. I didn’t buy the mixer but it was the only cola we had. It was not good.
I find it interesting how Americans see the word “fortnight” as some archaic thing but it’s still in regular use in English outside of the US.
