“Nice try boys. Time is but a door, death is but a window – I’ll be back!”

Damn I had no idea. That smile
Data would never.
Even if he should have.
Pulaski is one of my favourite characters. Far more interesting than Crusher, and loads of room for development and growth.
I’d watch a spin off of just her and Data as a reluctant buddy cop duo.
For me, my dislike of her comes much more from the attitude she gives off.
Outside of her interactions with Data, she’s brusque, domineering and frankly unprofessional.
Her attitude towards Data is bigotry pure and simple (and the kind of bigotry we’d not expect of a senior medical officer serving on Starfleet; and was largely settled in Measure of a Man… but we won’t talk about that episode, its an entirely different rant.)
Lets just put it this way. If any of my employees said the same kinda shit about another of my employees, they’d be terminated at my earliest convenience. If they did that to one of their superiors? (remember, Data was the second officer. In terms of shipwide command it went Picard->Ryker->Data.)
More to the point, she was constantly manipulating him into shitty little games goading him into proving his capabilities as a person. Like in the Moriarty episode, and in the episode with the strategema guy. (the battle simulation with ryker and a small contingent posing as a disadvantaged opposition,)
To be fair a lot of the problems with the character stem more from the fact they wanted a heel than from anything else. she didn’t grow into something tolerable because they didn’t want a character that grew into something tolerable.
Oh, absolutely. I feel it’s one of the biggest missed opportunities in TNG.
I will say, however, that I always viewed her getting Data to play the stratagema dude was something of a turning point. At the end she’s very much on team Data.
I also thought it was refreshing to see someone very imperfect and needing to work in their attitude in the series.
Usually it’s Troys mum that they just let slide (or hide from), or is someone already refined.
This was one of the first proper human characters in the show that had something they could work on, and could grow into being a proper crew member.
It honestly might have been interesting to explore these questions by Picard having given Data the assignment to mentor Wesley.
First off, let’s be honest, Data is the consummate Star Fleet Officer. Intelligent, compassionate, loyal and reliable, kind. competent; and a bright eyed and bushy tailed explorer.
Secondly, Wesley is the kind of character that can poke at what it means to be “human” or whatever without it being an attack.
Also, lets be honest. Ryker? as a role model? GHASTLY.
So she was McCoy, who was every bit as brusque, domineering, and frequently racist toward Spock.
Funny no one complains about that.
I wonder why…
If there’s anything to complain about, it’s that her relationship with Data and McCoy’s with Spock were so obviously intended to be parallels that it just felt kinda lazy.
Ignoring that people absolutely were and are critical of McCoy’s “banter”… the two relationships are inside an entirely different context.
McCoy and Spock are extremely close friends, who hold deep respect for one another, and Spock certainly gave it back just as well.
McCoy never, however, not once questioned whether Spock was a person. Nor did he go around talking about how Spock was just an object and lacked the ability to do more than regurgitate rote facts with other senior officers.
Never, ever, has McCoy called Spock “it” while questioning his basic competency to do simple tasks, and never has McCoy, when corrected by Kirk, offered backhanded apology saying something to the effect of “I’m sorry, I’m unaccustomed to working with Nonliving Devices” like how Pulaski did- as if Data were a new model tricorder.
The first episode with Pulaski, she tells Troi to pick someone else to be in the med bay for moral support because, according to her, Data couldn’t do that. Fortunately, Troi refused.
Neither did McCoy ever try to kill the entire ship’s company and get angry with Kirk when he said “no."
Nor did he do anything like how she went around repeatedly trapping Data into doing bullshit things to prove he was indeed a person, or whatever you want to call it. To prove something that cannot be proven. Not even by Pulaski about herself. Pulaski’s personhood is just assumed by society where every moment Data has to prove that he is. And she’s wielding that power imbalance like a club.
Even in her second to last episode (Peak performance,) she’s setting Data up in these challenges and when she realizes she finally goes too far; her advice is to get back up there and do it again.
Outside of her relationship with data, which is the bulk of what we see on screen.
Ultimately, the problem is that Data is not Spock. Where Spock was able to respond to the barbed banter, Data was largely unable or unwilling. He just took it, and for me it rather feels like watching Pulaski kick a puppy,
Where McCoy and Spock were two equals, Pulaski kept him off the podium of personhood, where McCoy might have apologized in good faith, she treated him like a tricorder, and that literally in an emergency. Where McCoy was a main character with background and more fleshed out, Pulaski was fairly one dimensional.
Where McCoy’s barbs served to illuminate Spock’s nature as a hyper-rational highly logical and unemotionall person, Pulaski served to highlight Data’s empathy, and kindness and loyalty.
I think plenty of people did complain about that. And if my memory is right, that was a big reason she was removed after only 1 season and Crusher brought back. They wanted a different dynamic than Those Old Scientists
I think it also hurt that the first Pulaski episode has her arguing fiercely and repeatedly with Picard, and then turning out to be so catastrophically wrong that everyone on the ship would’ve died if Picard hadn’t held firm. That’s Unnatural Selection, episode 7 of the season. Early enough to inform early impressions of the character.
yup. Brusque. Domineering. Unprofessional.
one of the things that cracked me up, though, was that they could re-materialize the “kid” in stasis with that vacuformed stuff on top of him but couldn’t, like, selectively not transport a space suit or other hazmat suit. (I.e. beam the person over, re-materialize the suit first, then the person. then when they’re coming back, you beam the two over but leave the suit de-materialized and just replicate a new one.)
They absolutely could have safely sent bodies over if what we saw on the episode was ‘safe enough’.
(as a side note, why did they have to expose anyone at all to see? A petri dish with something that looks vaguely like human cells would have been enough. we’ve been doing that ourselves for ages.)
Hey, she had a couple real moments
I forget what they were, but I’m sure she had them
I love that she refused to use the transporter
I like when she set that grand strategy guy up to get stomped by Data.
There was the episode they had no access to their advanced medicine and she was an expert in olde timey splints and things. The episode with the psychic kids she threw her own life on the line to help (though that was partially hubris).
She’s a total dick to Data, which I don’t exist, but other than that I like her stubbornness and personality.
Pulaski > Crusher
Every single day of the week.
bbut she doesn’t like Data, the AI pretending to be a person!
Edit before anyone @'s me with how the show saw him grow- let me ask you this-
Do you consider a Huawei/UBtech robot running PanguLM - a person?
Do you consider a Qwen3.8 instance - a person? Not just ‘like a person’ but a full fledged person like you’re considering Data? Because that’s all Data is - an llm with a body.
Sadly, my Autistic ass considers a lot of inanimate objects as “human”. I end up talking to them as if they had human emotions and feelings. I even feel guilty if I end up banging things or losing them entirely.
Cars, computers, washing machines, gaming consoles, plants, cats, NPCs in video games, even LLMs…
I would have liked to see Pulaski get more fleshed out. And try to round out her character, like the EMH.
I mean, I get the joke, but data was absolutely not an llm with a body. The positronic brain was the entire point of the character, that it was able to learn and grow like biological people. Llms lack that, and even if the underlying programming was exactly the same, Data was still able to engage in self directed growth in a way they can’t because of his brain

Do you consider a Qwen3.8 instance - a person? Not just ‘like a person’ but a full fledged person like you’re considering Data? Because that’s all Data is - an llm with a body.
This is incorrect. Consciousness arises out of complexity. LLM’s and chatbots and our modern robots are not complex enough to be conscious. While modern philosophers and experts in AGI don’t have a solid answer on what we’re even talking about by ‘sapient’ or whatever fancy word people want to use to say ‘like us’, Data is unquestionably presented as being like us.
And ‘like us’ in a way that not even the Big D’s computer is capable of.
I’m with you regarding Pulaski vs. Crusher (Crusher is such a boring personality), but the rest ist bullshit and you missed the entire point of Data’s character.
Imagine thinking spicy text prediction is the same as data, an AGI in a human form factor.
100%, I loved her character and wish she had more episodes.
Say what You want about Pulaski but at least she didn’t give birth to Wesley.
I feel bad for Will Wheaton. I mean. Gene Roddenberry didn’t do the character any favors.
She banged Rikers dad, so she could actually be Riker’s mother and just not know it.
Motherhood is fact… Fatherhood is persuesian.
