Senator Chris Murphy says he has been briefed on the US’s plan to restart the war on Iran, calling it “insane” and saying it would lead to a “devastating escalation”.

“You’ve heard a preview that it would be a short-duration plan. I’ll just say this: their plan is insane,” Murphy said, speaking at an event organised by the Middle East Institute in Washington, DC, on Wednesday.

“It will lead to devastating escalation and the likely destruction of our commitment to the rule of law.”

…

“There’s been open reporting as to what we may be planning and the civilian infrastructure we may be targeting,” Murphy said.

"They’ve been asked by the president to develop a plan - whether they believe it will work or not, I do not know. But the plan that they have developed will lead, in my view, to a prolongment and an escalation of this war that will be devastating for our security interests.

“We are seeing the president ready another devastating military campaign after the election, just as illegal as the first iteration was at the time, where Americans are fed up with this war.”

They will say it’s insane. And bad. And worrying. But they won’t do a thing about it.

Controlled opposition. Not all of them, but enough, particularly at the national level. The 2021-2023 majority wasn’t enough. The 2009-2011 super majority somehow wasn’t enough. Establishment-aligned candidates run on milquetoast platforms addressing only a handful of token issues, and often just to roll policy back to much how it was prior to Republican lawmaking. Not the real, sweeping change clearly needed - because that would harm the financial interests of their primary donors.

FWIW, I’m not an American. This is just what I saw whilst living there and what we see in the news. Constantly.

Since criticizing the wrong team is often met with the bizarre assumption one is a Russian troll encouraging Americans not to vote: go vote for the best candidate, but remember that political engagement shouldn’t begin and end at the ballot box. The US needs far more than whinging online.

Ok. Alright. We are gonna - we’re gonna go out there during this break and we are gonna come back with a plan. We’re gonna come back with a plan for you. It’s a 45 day plan. 45 days to get us back on track. 45 points. It’s a 45 day/45 point. One point per day. We get the 45 points we are back in business. And you can take that to the bank. And Limo Lady, we are going completely carbon neutral. I love you, New York! You. You.

If you include non-voters, it’s really only a third of the country that supports it. And if you include ineligible voters, it’s closer to a fifth.

Fascism isn’t popular. Don’t give them power by repeating their lies that it is.

If you include non-voters it’s more than a third of the country supporting it. If you don’t vote against it you are giving it tacit support.

That’s true in the aspect of those non-voters can’t deny their culpability in what they refused to vote against.

However it does not hold so far as to assert that this administration has their assent. Two-thirds support would literally be a mandate from the people; don’t let them believe their delusion that they have one.

The other half didn’t convict the pedophile rapist when they had the chance as well…

The government is completely morally bankrupt except for some senators, but even their actions seem performative.

So I assume this either means they’re planning a boots on the ground campaign in Iran or using nukes.

I also assume the reason they fired the planning guy from Pentagon a few days ago is because he wouldn’t plan this for them?

Does anyone remember what the goal of this war was even supposed to be? Like what were they trying to accomplish in the first place? What is this planned escalation supposed to accomplish that the first one didn’t?

I know the real answer. Bibi said to, epstein honeypot, distraction from the files, hegseth needed to feel tough, etc…

I mean what are they pretending the reason for this war is?

We don’t have the resources for a ground invasion. And nukes are extremely unlikely.

What is more likely, and what the senator appears to be referring to, is bombing campaign aimed at destroying the vital civilian infrastructure of the country. Think power plants, bridges, ports, water treatment facilities, etc.

Oh god. Iran has some of the oldest heritage sites in the world. Early Zarathustrian fire temples and stuff like that.

I know modern infrastructure is important too; bridges, hospitals, universities, bazaars, etc., not to mention the human lives themselves. But when something is thousands of years old it’s worth preserving in its own right. It’s always a shame when monuments are destroyed.

Hopefully someone manages to stop this “insane plan” before it causes more destruction…

From what they’ve talked about before and from what this article says, they’re talking about bombing civilian infrastructure like bridges, power generation. One assumes not hospitals, but if a couple slip in there, I’m sure it’ll be “accidental”.

I used to think we were above such things. And I think that generally speaking we did try, although not very hard. Civilian casualties in Iraq/Afghanistan, for example. I’m pretty sure we generally didn’t go out doing much of that on purpose, although I know we sure didn’t try hard to avoid it.

Russia is a step beyond, for now, as they actively target civilians. Whereas, for example, I think the school bombing we did was stupidity/ineptitude.

And even now, I don’t think we’re going to target civilian housing or hospitals or schools purposefully, but we’re getting a step close if we do target civilian infrastructure.

But when you get down to this level of detail in the “not as bad as” discussion… it’s getting pretty bad.

Targeting civilian infrastructure is targeting civilians. Bridges have people crossing them, power plants have civilian workers.

US head of military planning was fired this week for no reason.

destruction of our commitment to the rule of law

Means mass civilian/infrastructure casualties. Beyond evil, the insanity accusation is Iran’s strong retaliation capability which can delay “normal energy supplies” for another 2+ years.

There is still a likelihood that it is a ploy to extract more benefits from “GCC allies” for Trump+cronies to avoid their devastation. This has lasted 6 months though.

They could also do it to lock-in superprofits for Big Oil so losing the midterms can’t reverse that. Bonus - Democrat-controlled senate and house would appear even more incapable of doing anything, even if progressives hold the balance of power.

Trump has boasted twice in campaign appearances recently, as he did at start of war: America (big oil) is getting rich off of global energy destruction. Screw all y’all.

I still lean towards it all being a bluff that just has US leave region, and get some extortion from allies before doing so. Couldn’t do it before mid terms, or at least Israel elections, because of embarrassment of defeat. I lean towards this just because “insane” negative consequences to world. But, sure, maybe $200+ oil is a “good thing” in his mind, and the stupid during campaigning is to avoid promising a smooth end of the war.
