Interesting. I played the game a fair amount, but it doesn’t usually hook me. I feel like exploring is often kind of hollow and I don’t find interesting stuff

It’s totally the opposite for me: I was playing yesterday and explored a historical site that one of the villagers in a marshland village told me about.

It turned out to be an enormous library; the first floor had been ransacked for easy pickings, but delving down further into the darkness I found dozens of books to pack up and take back to the Stilt and give to the librarian.

I descended down to the very bottom of the structure, scooping them all up. I was about to leave and head to the Stilt to trade for my reward when I spotted a weird liquid in the dark corner of an old closet. I’d never seen it before, but there was a single dram of cloning draught next to an old dead body.

I fried it up in a pot with some salty slime and ate it. Later that day three clones of myself budded off of my back and squished onto the wet floor behind me.

I equipped them all and now we’re four identical bros all looking out for each other.

Every description someone writes about an interesting experience in the game reads like a meth-fueled fever dream.

Interestingly you can play as an animal or plant in the current release of Qud, heck you can play as a concrete wall. You just can’t start as those things.

Psionics is definitely a source of weirdness.

I’m running a mod that lets you play as any creature in the game. This run I’m a snapjaw brute, a low-level creature that’s not much of a threat to anyone.

It’s a very difficult start, because you don’t even get a waterskin. I was fortunate enough to find a ruin just one parasang away from the starter village, so I sold a couple of the books for a hundred drams of water and a skin. I hate selling books, but it was enough to get me started.

I’m also running a mod that lets me change the appearance of myself and my followers at a gutsmonger. I gave everyone a dye-job so that I can tell them apart.

That sounds amazing. I’ve not delved into the modding scene yet, the vanilla game is already so complex and engrossing.

The one that I would absolutely recommend is a fork (to bring it up to the current version) of Clever Girl that makes companions much easier to manage.

Now I can tell them to grab their own equipment. I usually throw my stuff into a big pile now and let all of my followers pick through it and grab what they want before I liquidate it all.

I’ve played it using GameNative which uses the same FEX translation layer that the Steam Frame does, letting me run it on my Pixel 7.

The controller mapping is fantastic; the only alteration I had to make was another RT so that I could cycle through things with RT + D-pad.

There’s also a Switch port if you have one of those.

They’ve done an incredible bit of UI design to make it all work with a controller. I’ve played it almost exclusively from the couch or portably on my Steam Deck.

One thing I’d recommend is to go into options and change the health warning threshold to 60% instead of 40%. It’ll help your survivability.

A couple of handy controller tips that I hope survive the translation to the Switch controller: Use LT+Y to autoexplore. This will have your character look at everything interesting on the screen for clues to new places to explore & gather some obvious stuff.

Press Y to prompt which edge of the screen to move to, saving you from having to click through every space.

If it looks like there’s something in your square that you want to grab or look at, use LT+A and then A again to pull up a list of your own square (or you can indicate an adjacent square and press A).

Good luck! It’s an incredible game.

That’s how I felt after about 30 hours. I stopped playing and then came back to it a year or two later, progressed on the main story quests, and all of a sudden I’ve been playing for over 300 hours.
