Right, sure, but I would spin up the infra and hand you the keys.
Being an admin is more than I signed up for, I have no understanding of server shit, and that just means the eventual possibility of instability is on me, as I’m not in the best health - or best country - to begin with. Health is what wrecked poor Ernest and Kbin, not decisions on his part, after all.
On top of that, the issue of migration I’m talking is not spinning up a new comm - that takes all of five minutes. It’s building the community back up. People don’t migrate with the community migration - comms ‘catch’ many casual users over the course of their existence who are nonetheless vital for its day-to-day functioning.
I appreciate that you want me here, but it’s certainly not that I feel driven off by the community. I just don’t have it in me to continue in unstable conditions, and all I see from the Fediverse, after my experiences here, is instability or the possibility thereof.
Have you tried using a PieFed’s community migration feature when moving from lemmy.world? Did the feature live to its promises?
No, I moved over manually in large part because it wasn’t so much that I wanted to preserve the archive of history shitposts (though I did, a bit) but because it allowed me to generate high activity for a while with less effort. So I could post 3-4 times a day, using the ‘best-of’ from the old comms, instead of once or twice a day trawling the dark corners of the internet for good material, rebuilding the comm audience.

Life is entropy, I guess. Sorry if that adds an unneeded existential crisis to what you’re already dealing with, but it’s the truth. Stable systems/conditions are a myth.
I know you said you don’t have another migration in you, and I’m not going to try to convince you otherwise. But if you ever change your mind, sopuli seems pretty chill. I honestly don’t know much about it, but that’s exactly what I mean. I’ve literally never seen or heard anything from the sopuli admins. For all I know they don’t even exist. They do of course, somewhere in the background, but they’re very hands-off. I think they’re based in Finland.

Yeah, but some conditions are less unstable than others. I don’t mind so much participating in something that has a decent chance of being radically different - or dead - in ten years. In one year? That’s… a level of instability that is much less appealing.
Absolute stability might be a myth, but there’s still a difference between modern Finland and Sengoku Jidai Japan.

Honestly, my move to Lemmy.world was only out of the hope that Kbin’s demise might be temporary. I’m… in general averse to instances using Lemmy, not because of admins, but because of the devs. Even right now, there’s a massive banner of the genocide-denying fascist devs of Lemmy begging for money on Sopuli.
My move from Piefed is based on my user experience (and, to a lesser degree, the user experience of others, which will likely inhibit growth and the long-term health of the system). My move from Lemmy was fundamentally on moral grounds - I’d prefer to minimize the help I give to fascists like the devs, even indirectly.
I’ve certainly never heard anything bad about the Sopuli admins, but I’m definitely not moving back to a Lemmy instance.
Yeah, but some conditions are less unstable than others
True. I’ve got no argument there.
I’m… in general averse to instances using Lemmy, not because of admins, but because of the devs.
I get that. I’ve been wanting to move to piefed because of this too, but now I’m not sure which instance to use. I’ll have to wait and see which one’s don’t implement the vote quota, because fuck that.
Even right now, there’s a massive banner of the genocide-denying fascist devs of Lemmy begging for money on Sopuli.
I haven’t noticed that. Is it only on the website? I’m using summit and the only donation banner I see on their homepage is one of the admins’ patreon, and a few crypto wallets.
They even have a link to !ukraine@sopuli.xyz, so I assume that means they’re not tankies or .ml supporters.
Again, I’m not trying to talk you out of your decision. Just sharing my experience and (limited) knowledge. I honestly don’t blame you for leaving over this change, I probably would too in your situation. I’m just sad to see it.
If I had known they would implement such a drastic change so quickly, I would have argued more with rimu in that post where he shared the charts. It probably wouldn’t have changed anything though, and I was already burnt out from arguing with tankies and trolls elsewhere on the fediverse. I was probably too grumpy to form a constructive and cool-headed argument anyway.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think the Sopuli admins are tankies or ml supporters in the least. It’s just that, by using Lemmy, they’re in the unenviable position of either being ‘free riders’ by refusing to support the devs, thus endangering the long-term health of the ecosystem… or supporting the devs, who are ghoulish. It’s a no-win scenario, and I don’t blame them at all for the choice they made.
It’s just why I avoid Lemmy instances altogether. There’s no good answer.

Unfortunately, several people told him in the Matrix channel before the implementation that it was a non-issue that didn’t need any sort of ‘solution’, and he went ahead anyway.
Rimu is very headstrong. Unfortunately, in this case.
Yeah, I’d prefer if they were using piefed too, and that’s the main reason I’m thinking of switching to a different instance. But now I need to wait and see what piefed instances aren’t gonna implement this stupid quota.

I guess that’s the problem with open-source, decentralized software. You’ve got a bunch of random devs working on their own projects, and you can choose to use their software or find someone else who does it better. But when there’s more or less only two options, and both are stubborn and make bad decisions, it doesn’t leave an easy alternative.
Don’t get me wrong, rimu isn’t nearly as bad as the lemmy devs. But for providing the main alternative, it just sucks that he would do something so ill-advised.
If this is our alternative to corporate capture, then things are looking grim…

As I always tell myself, and others, there are no good solutions in the world. Everything has trade-offs. I still believe in non-corporate social media, but the Iron Law of Institutions remains even in non-profits - decision-makers make decisions based on their interests (and values), not the interest of the institution.
The fediverse should be an ideal solution to that, cause anyone with a server can make their own instance. But they have to choose a protocol to run it on, and that’s where the bottleneck is.
If there was a larger org that developed one as a community effort, something like the Linux Foundation or FSF/GNU or any of the main distros, something like that, then I think that could solve the stability and governance problems without compromising on the FOSS ideals

Keep your account active for two more weeks and I’ll DM you details?
I’ll even handle the migration, all you have to do is post.
