Redecked a dock. The pressure washing at the end was the most satisfying part. Happily there was very little rot on the 2x6 runners and none on the 4x4 posts. I think it’ll look great with some of that deck repair paint glopped on!

I fixed some of these by patching the runners similarly to your description, affixing and then cutting out all the rot until I got back to good wood and putting wood hardener in. It can definitely be just as strong. My thought on it though is if you already have all the boards off replacing the runners is just as much work as cutting and patching. I’m a big believer in sizing things to whatever length my boards are though to try and minimize cutting (work) whenever possible.
In my case my back porch is elevated so I walked under and can see the work previously done.
I’m probably going to hire someone to do it right. Not sure if patching or replacing is required.
One of the posts needs reinforcement. Crappy concrete pour is loose.
I’d hire someone too if it was high enough to walk under. I’ve seen too many deck and porch fail videos online to feel comfortable doing that myself.
