And they’ll all have age verification…
Steam had age verification forever. You paid for a game with a credit card? You are above 18. They are still using this in the UK where other companies are asking for a photo or an ID. There was no talk, that I heard, about changing that.
SteamOS boots you right into steam, so there is no need for them to do anything else.
Age attestitation, not verification, which is clearly now becoming a larger issue with more implications. You could load up a gift card too instead of a credit card. SteamOS also has a desktop mode so you don’t have to game and use Steam but the laws want the OS itself to implement age verification. We shouldn’t defend any form of age verification
Yes, I agree with you. “Age” verification bad. But until we make politicians to change their tunes, companies need to comply with the law. And honestly, Steam’s looks like the least invasive one.
Steam is a part of Steam OS. It’s not just some another application that you can or don’t need to install. It’s there when you buy the device. And you can use SteamOS (including desktop mode) only after you logged into Steam. I think that’s enough and they don’t need to do anything else, but I’m not a lawyer.
I think people should just use other gaming distros with a big picture mode and login to Steam if they choose through it’s program. Then the user wouldn’t have OS age verification.
Politicians and the courts are so corrupt. Why should we fight back through the same corrupt systems? That seems counter intuitive to me. People need to take a stand in more effective ways.
What?
The Steam machines, even though they’re Linux, will have age verification baked in so Valve can sell them in all the States of the USA and other countries that demand it.
Steam asks for date of birth already when creating the account.
That’s what the current/proposed laws ask for.
Steam may ask but the laws want it implemented by the operating system, and SteamOS can do more than just play games within Steam.
The law is by user, and the steamOS user is the steam user.
You already gave it.
