U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee announced Wednesday that the United States is organizing evacuations of American citizens out of Israel, as the specter of the U.S. potentially striking against Iran looms.
In a post on X, Huckabee wrote that the embassy is “working on evacuation flights and cruise ship departures” for citizens who are “wanting to leave” the country. Americans looking to leave Israel via an evacuation flight or cruise ship departure need to be registered via the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, Huckabee added.
But the announcement follows several days of signaling from President Donald Trump and the White House that it is mulling intervening in the ongoing fighting between Israel and Iran to take out Iranian nuclear facilities buried underground.
Israel has barred its own citizens from leaving the country, so I wonder where that leaves dual citizenship settlers. Even if they show up at the border with their US passports, I’m sure the border field office computers will out them as an Israelis.
[Israeli Transportation Minister Miri Regev] clarified that only non-Israeli nationals—such as diplomats and tourists—are currently permitted to leave the country.
Edit to add: This is all I’ve found so far, from a law firm. It’s a bit vague, but seems to imply that dual citizenship won’t save you.
In practice, this means that any Israeli citizen seeking to leave the country must now prove that their travel is essential and urgent. Travel for leisure, non-critical business, or personal convenience will not suffice.
In contrast, foreign nationals and tourists holding non-Israeli passports (not including Israeli dual nationals) are not required to obtain special approval.
I’m not sure this works how you’re imagining. When you have dual citizenship, you’re treated as a citizen by two countries - meaning they could still choose the US evacuation. You’re American, full stop, doesn’t matter if you’re also Israeli.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Israel tries to prevent them leaving anyway. Apparently Huckabee and Netanyahu got into a shouting match over Bibi trying to keep US citizens from leaving.
I’m short on sympathy for anyone who had the means to leave and hadn’t already done it.
As far as I’m concerned, they chose to become enemy combatants the moment they moved to Israel, and they should stay and suffer the consequences.
