Hello,

we will be performing the long awaited update to Lemmy 0.19.9 tomorrow.

We are planning for around 1 hour of downtime between 16:00-17:00 UTC on 16th of March.

You can convert this to your local time here: https://inmytime.zone/?iso=2025-03-16T16%3A00%3A00.000Z

You can find an overview of the changes in our previous announcement here and in the Lemmy release notes:

Update 16:50 UTC:

The upgrade was successfully completed at around 16:27 UTC, but we’re still fighting with some performance issues after the upgrade. Our database and the outbound federation container are currently using significantly higher CPU than expected, which is still being investigated to identify the root cause.

Apparently they’re next to the timestamp now (you can see the “↑ 4” on your screenshot, and if you sort this post’s comments by Best, the Futurama meme shows as “↑ 87 ↓ 1”)

Don’t feel bad. I had that exact same back and forth with myself.

I was also half asleep, high, and pooping, and I still figured it out on my own…so maybe feel a LITTLE bit bad.

                Congratulations.

I find the new spot for the numbers a bit wierd, because they end up in different places according to the lenght of the username and other info like instance name.

I might be a bit confused, but I just went to my settings to see, and both “show upvotes” and “show downvotes” were ticked already, by default. I refreshed the page (Ctr+Shift+R), and it’s still the same.

Aaaah, I get it now, thanks! I did see the “↑ 4” bits everywhere, but it turns out that every single comment I have looked at had 0 downvotes, and then instead of going ”↓ 0”, it just simply doesn’t display downvotes. I thought I was going mad.

I liked the previous implementation, though. To me it seemed more clear.

Finally, the ability to view (and delete!) your own uploads.

FYI, the sorting on the uploads tab is broken. Obviously I don’t expect sorting by “top” or “controversial” or whatever to work, but sorting by “old” doesn’t, either. It’s always sorted by newest first. But at least it’s something. (I know for sure I have images uploaded that were not used in posts.)

I directly noticed that the background color got brighter and looked in this community to see whether a post like this got published. I mean, congrats on the new update I guess but I liked the darker dark mode more 😔

I recall thinking that as well, but fwiw you do get used to it and it’s extremely minor.

The fact that up and downvote counts sometimes appear on the left and otherwise on the right you never get used to though - I hate it.

partial breakage, the stuff that people on other instances have already been experiencing for a while.

iirc there are still some additional issues with sync arising with the update, but it won’t be entirely broken.

For me Sync has been broken since long ago (proud Summit user now), my instance has always been updated faster than .world though, so I can’t really pinpoint since which version I started having issues with it.

I used sync for reddit for years, but I kinda hope sync dies. But I also have an axe to grind with the dev after they invalidated the app purchases and made people buy it again to not have ads. Plus their inability to update on a regular basis is kinda terrible, and has continued. One of the top posts on the sync community when I checked was to not report PMs because it will actually report a random comment with the same ID, which is just a massive fuck up given the amount of spam PMs.

Honestly I was fine with the rebuy at first since it was a significant recode AND because they promised to stay on top of development a lot better than they had in the past. Obviously that was a lie and that’s why I’m frustrated with them.

they invalidated the app purchases and made people buy it again to not have ads.

Exactly. Not even a discount. I think it was even more expensive than the reddit version.

I just checked. It’s $20 to remove ads. Wow.
I also checked to see how much it cost for the reddit version. I paid $4 to remove ads and $5 for the “pro” version. That’s more than I’ve paid for any app. Now they want another $20 to remove ads on an app they neglect and ignore their customers? Disgusting.

Plus their inability to update on a regular basis is kinda terrible, and has continued.

Not just continued, but has gotten worse. Additionally, it’s even more important to update more frequently because of the more frequent changes. It was also never fully functional for Lemmy. For example, spoilers have never worked.

To add to all that, they don’t even have the decency to pop in for a quick comment or two just to help people feel better.

Wow that’s a lot of salt for someone trying to value their work higher. Maybe just use a different app? Ironically I was a pro user on Reddit and have never been forced to upgrade on Lemmy as it has never shown me a single ad despite the fact that I would in heartbeat ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ , I have never had issues with any Sync app and I’ve been a user since…I dunno 2013?

I do agree that JDLawson has become more reclusive but he was never all that interactive with the community to be honest. I don’t see that updates or stability of the app has really been an issue. Any time I have had problems they have always been native to Lemmy.

Former Sync user of around 5 years. Recently switched to summit and it was a pretty easy transition. I’ve made plenty of rants about how the Dev just abandons paying customers and I finally had enough once I knew that it actually messes things up if you try to report some things.

I can’t make any other app look and feel as nice as Sync, honestly. I was trying out Thunder just now, and maybe I could get used to it but the user avatars don’t work for some reason. I don’t disagree about ljdawson though and I wish it was different.

If you haven’t tried Summit, give it a go, the default look is NOT Sync like but it has a lot of customization options and I feel like I’ve gotten my setup looking pretty close.

I’ve tried but like all other apps it’s not perfect. I don’t know why you can’t tweak the spacer in your post view. List With Cards gets kinda close but the spacer is too big (and the cards could be a little more compact). With Compact view the spacer is too thin.

I also hate the way it handles user avatars/profile pictures. Why are Sync and Boost the only apps that do it properly? Hide it altogether if no custom picture is selected, otherwise display it. All the “default Lemmy” user avatars make the comment section too busy in Summit, but I want to see custom ones since it helps me identify people I recognise.

Summit also doesn’t do a different font colour for pinned threads.

Yeah, yet another proprietary app is really the place to go.

Thunder works great, it FOSS, and under active development.

Edit: A few days after this comment Summit has been open sourced.

You don’t need to understand the underlying OS best practices because the app dev is given full access to the device

You also don’t need to understand the underlying OS to make false claims about how it works.

If I intended to insult you, I would have. But when you make an outrageous claim without evidence, it can be dismissed without evidence, and I’m not in any shape to explain why your assertion that an app gets full access to your system on install is laughable. I’m also not in any shape to deal with thin skinned posters who see insults in everything, so good day.

Well in my reddit days, I would open the app, see it was still down and angrily close it again

But with the far superior decentralized Lemmy-verse I just have to switch to an alt on a different instance lol

So now the game plan will be open app, waste a minute waiting for the timeout on my .world account and remember why and then switch to my .cafe account LMAO

PieFed and Mbin both allow you to block URLs, like of a particular news source that you don’t want. At a guess, the Sync and Connect Lemmy apps may do likewise (but I don’t truly know). If Lemmy does not do it in the base web UI, you may have to hunt around to get the functionality that you want. I just wanted to let you know that it definitely does exist, maybe not in base Lemmy, but in multiple other ways, in case that helps.

in short form, we have HAproxy running on a hetzner cloud VM for Lemmy/Lemmy-UI, another HAproxy VM for the alt UIs, a VM for the alt UIs.

for the main LW box, which runs lemmy containers, lemmy-ui, pictrs and a database each for lemmy and pictrs, we have a physical box with an EPYC 7502P 32 core CPU, 128GB memory and NVMe SSDs.

Huh interesting thanks! I’m pleasantly surprised at how little the “cloud” is part of it.

Thought for sure it would be some flavor of cloud with a whole bunch of VMs or something like Kubernetes for scalability lol
