He stated that the company was in the “early stages” of creating the device, which is still years away from a possible launch.

Sounds like it’s not a real thing yet, in my opinion. Companies as big as Sony are always “exploring” new products, that doesn’t mean they’ll be real. For the record, I love my Steam Deck, and I hope the portable market expands. But this isn’t real news, IMO.

Time to watch them fuck up another handheld.

The vita could’ve been so successful if Sony wasn’t braindead

They could just release it today with added L/R 2+3 buttons and, even without a game card slot and only an SD slot, it would just fly off the shelves.

It was a better looking device too. I would buy a vita right now if it played even just a fraction of the PS5 library and streamed the rest. I gave serious thought to buying one and modding it for retro games. I have never once considered the portal and I’ve had every PlayStation console except the first PS1 and their VR stuff.

I got a vita last year from a friend (he played it like a week when it was new) and I just love it! The buttons feel extremely nice and it in itself feels extremely premium and responsive

The Vita was such a nice piece of hardware. I don’t understand why just flat out ghosted their own product like they did.

If it’s backwards compatible with PSP, Vita, PS1, then I’m down. Otherwise, meh.

From the sound of it, it will just use PS5 OS. So probably not. But every system after PS1 other than the PS4 has had some sort of backwards compatibility.

PS2 base models were BC to PS1

PS3 base models were BC to PS2 (and PS1) even before they added digital-purchased emulated copies.

PS Vita has a built-in PSP that can play digital versions of those games as well as PS2 ones.

PS4 had a very limited selection of PS2 games released digitally for it.

          PS5 is BC with PS4.

They could do a lot better, though. Their digital offerings are extremely limited and have yet to tackle the issue of emulating the cell processor at reasonable speeds.

Besides access to console-exclusive titles, what does this thing do better than a Steam Deck? The fact that it requires an internet connection to be useful is an instant turn off.

Where has it been stuff that it has to always be online?

Sony and Nintendo are the only ones still doing console exclusives. Sony only cherry pick what they release elsewhere. Even if this handheld doesn’t have specific exclusives for it itself (if it is for playing games you can play on ps4/5 and nothing else) it still has value in the sense that it’s still a handheld and can be played anywhere rather than tethered to a tv or monitor.

Nintendo is a given, I was thinking of Sony and Microsoft. I think you’re right about it’s possible value. People are loving the portable options.

For what it’s worth, the posted article isn’t talking about the Portal - actually talking about a theoretical unconfirmed new handheld.
