Huh. Interesting. I thought a child automatically inherits the citizenships of their parent a birth. Weird.

Well I didn’t get my citizenship from birth myself. I got it through my father because if you’re born before 1983 to a native Brit who was married to your mother when you were born anywhere in the world, you get automatic citizenship. But it doesn’t transfer down.

And that law itself changed some time after I was born because my father tried when I was a baby and it wasn’t transferable at all. But that was before the British Empire completely collapsed.

Wow, that’s surprisingly complicated! In Portugal it’s very simple, you’re Portuguese if either parent was. Sorry to hear it’s such a mess in the UK. But good luck, I hope your family will qualify for permanent residence.

I have a cousin in Portugal. I’m not sure how she got there. She is also a British/American dual national. She and her wife look like they are having the best time. They live on the coast and all the pictures she posts make me jealous. Anyway, thanks!

It’s a beautiful country! Lisbon is well worth a weekend getaway once you get settled!

I do plan to visit eventually. Also, I see you have the misfortune of being up this early too.
