Oh yeah, Discord isn’t a forum replacer at all - it’s a Skype/IRC/Chatroom replacer.

The mods who left were quickly replaced.

Most mod teams didn’t leave. They made an example of a handful of especially rebellious mod teams, albeit I believe in most cases they had a quisling near the bottom of the mod list contacting reddit to tell them they would happily take over.

But there’s a difference between doing that dozen times, and having to do that a thousand times.

The subreddit mods had all the power. If the top mods of all the communities that blacked out just removed all mods and shut down the subreddit, it would’ve been chaos on Reddits end. Most people are not well-suited to moderating.

2023 was such a wasted opportunity because the moderators chickened out. For about a week, almost every single sizeable community was blacked out. A large chunk of Reddit during that period was genuinely inaccessible. Reddit would have been unprepared for a complete mass-walkout of community moderators during the 2023 Reddit API strikes. But after a few token gestures and a few examples made of some especially rebellious mod-teams, most of the striking moderators returned.

A huge opportunity was missed by people running major communities to functionally degrade Reddit in at least the medium-term as a website. You can’t just hastily promote random people to replace moderators Reddit is either forced to remove or who leave voluntarily. The average person is likely too lazy, too arbitrary and too corrupt to effectively oversee communities of notable sizes.

Just a detail, but if rimu changing the logo to different flags every few days for a bit upsets you - you can just jump to another piefed instance rather than dropping piefed entirely.

I originally chose lemm.ee because I wanted to set up a Television community (that didn’t exist), and it was the largest instance without one.

Then it shut down, but in the interim I became more and more aware of piefed.social, and was doing a lot of feed work on there anyway. So I moved over to piefed.

Piefed was down. Or at least piefed.social.

It won’t work. The user is talking about accounts that are masquerading as actual users, so they would not be identifying themselves as such.

It’s not as if anyone is /allowing/ these bot posts by the way. They are being banned when they’re spotted.

I have no idea why they allow bots. Usually websites are trying to get rid of bots, but I guess it’s backwards on Reddit and lemmy

The etiquette on Lemmy/Piefed is that bots are tagged as bots. I doubt anyone would allow a bot larping as a user.

Well, no, the site doesn’t /need/ them as such but 100% it’s a major issue for people coming over. Their hobbies are represented on Reddit. But not on here.

Bluesky is a Twitter alternative. It really doesn’t compare to Reddit.

Yes, it does - but you have to account for the users on there if you’re measuring the fediverse activity in general. And Mbin. Combined they’d add about 2.2k extra users this month.

Yeah I see them. I also see some other names too. Small places need active ‘power posters’.

That’s not logistically possible given each instance has its own rules.

But also, at the same time it seems self-evident to me that most of the 40k people here can talk about politics. Most are from the Anglosphere and the daily goings-on are relevant to them in some way. It seems also evident to me that less people here can talk about fishing, or baking because it’s of less interest to them. Reddit, by comparison, has a much larger population.

Well it’s just that politics/news are the two main things that most people can talk about. So that’s what trends. Many other topics have general interest barriers that naturally have lower ceiling of interests from the roughly 40k active users.

Well depends on the keywords. If one was to make a feed for Trump it would come up a lot. But the idea would be you could combine multiple keywords, so you might have a dozen or so.

Redundant accounts wouldn’t count as active accounts, so if an account was dormant for a year prior to lemm.ee shutting down, it wouldn’t register as an “active user” on a monthly check just because lemm.ee was still active.

I don’t know that a lack of users across the platform to support nicher topics necessarily justifies the charge of “echo chamber”. They are two different things.
