Don’t let Lemmy mislead you into thinking Linux is a drop-in replacement or easy to switch to. It’s a difficult process that takes learning, but hopefully you’ll find it worthwhile. Good luck with your troubleshooting.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Lemme.ee is closing, where do I go. Only been here 12 days lol?
109·9 months agoThis has really made me lose faith in a defederated system like this.
@Anyone: please let me know if I’m wrong about these and if there’s a solution, but as far as I can see:
- I can’t export my account (most importantly all the posts and comments I’ve saved).
- It’s difficult to find where a server is based.
- Some instances seem to be solo hobby projects. I don’t want to pick another instance that is at risk of being killed.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are you using a specific alarm ringtone, if yes which one?
2·9 months agoTalk radio station. Starts at low volume and builds up slowly. Calm voices are the most relaxed sound to wake up to. Tried all sorts of other sounds and they’re all too abrasive to wake up to.
When I look back at pictures of my kids when they were newborn, they look like little rats. Still were genuinely cute at the time. They just don’t photograph well.
I’ll still play with this when I go to pick up my kid from nursery.
We are the breakers of the wind.

Video games. Specifically I’ve started playing very retro games and emulating games from my childhood.
That’s not the point they’re making at all.
The point is when a website password
breedsneeds to be changed, then it won’t conform to the system anymore. Now you need to make a new system, or remember this particular exception.I had a system with a number in it. Any time a password change was needed then I would add 1 to the number. I might have to try two or the times to get the password right if I’ve changed it for the third time.
For anyone who might find this useful:
Kodi is great for normalising volume and I try to use Kodi for Plex and YouTube on the TV:
Try adjusting the Volume to about -20 dB and the Volume Amplification to +30 dB. The latter will compress the audio as it increases volume to avoid peaks, and will effectively “flatten” the volume contour a bit. Adjust the values to your taste.
The other thing that has really helped is having a good Bluetooth speaker. If the kids are playing and being noisy in the room while I’m trying to watch TV, then sound is much clearer if the speaker is right next to me rather than trying to turn up the volume to drown out other noises.

2·9 months agoPeople have vastly varying thresholds for what is acceptable here.
Also, this is one of those issues where it is far easier to make a case for “hygiene and cleanliness” and far harder to accept the opposite. So it acts kinda like a ratchet mechanism (easy to turn one way, difficult to bring it back the other way).

Dull Men's Club@lemmy.world•My customer had bought a brand new electric car so we went for a ride
15·9 months agoElectric cars are a lot like petrol cars. Less noisy and more acceleration; but in day to day driving, there isn’t a world is difference in the driving experience and absolutely no difference in the passenger experience.

3·9 months agoHave a look through this list. There are so many great games that hold up really well today.

9·9 months agoPSP has such a great games library and emulates so well on phones. I owned a PSP back in the day and played it constantly, but still I feel like I’m getting so much out of the games I didn’t play back then.
Try China Town Wars. It’s disappointing that top down games like that don’t get made more often.

2·9 months agoAgree with all that. “The year of Linux” will be built up to incrementally; and the fact that gaming is so good on Linux pushes that a long way.
The Steam Deck is what pushed me to change to full-time PC Linux myself. Having hardware with pre-installed Linux that works flawlessly has been great.

Games@lemmy.world•Dave2D - Windows Was The Problem All Along (Lenovo Legion Go Windows 11 vs. SteamOS)English
1·9 months agoMine was a pre-release preorder as well.
I wouldn’t upgrade it now. Knowing me, I’ll probably end up waiting till 2027 and buy a secondhand device from 2026.
I mostly play indie 2D games, so games I want still work fine. The revised Deck has a bunch of improvements I would have liked (OLED, WiFi 6, etc). If there are enough improvements in usability (screen, WiFi, size, battery, hardware power), then I’ll upgrade and give the old device to my kids (who currently use it for more than 75% of the time anyway).

41·9 months agoI hope so too, but I don’t think a shift that big is coming any time soon.
Linux users are still a tiny proportion of the online player base. Steam Deck sales are negligible compared to Switch or console sales.
I hope it happens eventually, but I think it’s going to take much longer for AAA gaming corps to take Linux seriously.
