I know this is about copyright/copyleft and stuff. However, I’m tired of seeing previously good and working projects start degrading in performance.

We recently switched from one media player to two because the former contained LLM regurgitated code and the replacement didn’t. Guess which one worked better? If you guessed the two replacements you’d be correct.

I actually asked some projects to move when Microsoft showed their hand and lack of ethics and complicity with both LLM (copilot specifically) gobbling up data and genocide.

The maintainers seemed unbothered by that and more concerned with their ability to be found, which to me says a lot about what priorities they have.

I deleted my github account and won’t be back, and in the meantime hope that open source projects realise that moving to a non AI infested coding host/forge like codeberg or self-hosted forgejo will be better in the long run. I don’t hold much hope but we’ll see.

All in all this has been a mess, both for users of open source software and coders.

Users because the regurgitated code does create errors and degrades performance. The degradation of performance could be said to be true of the maintainers/coders too as the more they rely on LLMs/ML the less belief they will have in their own work, and they will lose those skills even if they don’t lose that belief as has been well documented now.

It’s a sad state of affairs and I hope the ‘AI’ bubble bursts and we can go back to having decently coded programs etc again, in the mean time I’ll keep seeking out those that have explicitly said no to regurgitated code and promoting them over those who sycophantically support or rely on the bullshit machines.

Haven did it well in my opinion, but that might be because it was a pre-existing relationship.

Also, it did get lore dumpy in some places, however, you could feel the chemistry between the characters in most of their interactions.

Finding? Mostly through shows watched, games played, recommendations from others, looking through bandcamp and listening to digital radio stations or looking up music we hear on youtube, owncast, peertube etc.

Buying? Mostly digital (DRM Free only, FLAC, manually transcoded to opus). We don’t currently really have a CD or Vinyl player and just use our devices to play music instead, sometimes over bluetooth.

I think caregivers and children should definitely sit down and talk about it. Roblox is, for many reasons a predatory company. Just like most capitalists they don’t actually care about people, especially children. This has been shown not only in their lacklustre response to paedophiles, but also in their use of child labour to make them richer. Which they then do not compensate the children for fairly.

Agreed, that might help, I really really want Roblox gone, or controlled by those that actual utilise it for it’s allegedly intended purpose. The youth do need places online where they can be safe until what I talked above is implemented, sadly it seems nothing commercial is actually the way to do it, given the repeated reports of poor mental health, predatory behaviour etc coming from so called ‘child spaces’ on commercial platforms.

Edit: And that children are largely seen as property, or not people by a lot of ‘adults’, especially in the US as they never ratified the UN’s convention on the rights of the child.

This isn’t the only way to help, but a big one would be giving children freedom, rights etc as laid out by the Youth Liberation movement. The more children are controlled and have no say, aren’t taught how to have boundaries and to consent or not, and don’t have those boundaries and (lack of) consent respected, and aren’t taught what sex is etc the more they will fall victims to these predators.

Of course there is more that needs to be done, but it is a good start.
