  • Again, that’s not really up to you. Saying “period” doesn’t matter as it’s easier to dismantle a monster of your making.

Maybe read some early stuff that never made the canons as you would an novel anime, may be easier as they carrier less weird baggage and are often just as good, if not better, than those that did. Harry Potter is the new virgin magus messiah touching death to save the world for the masses that don’t want to go to masses, it’s fine but it’s far worse than the OG stuff imr.

I gather you are not aiming to, but you are playing the game and fervently evangelizing for some novel, likely US protestant strain of the Nicene machine, on the socials as the true Christianity and everything else as heresy. Consider not doing that.

Consider the dead Christians, the heretics, those that were tortured and burned or had their works condemned and names dragged though the mud for coming on 2000yrs now. Basildes was pushing some cool Christian memes long before ‘believe in the bible’ would go viral for example and they had to start burning Diatesserons by the hundreds, but this kinda stuff has always been there.

Calling the bible ‘an insane book’ makes me think you are not overly well versed here, at basic ‘the bible’ is a rather vast and varied collection of texts that have been in flux for millennia and how one works with these traditions is very much open to interpretation, and inspiration . The Tewahedo canon or the First New Testament might be worth a peek for a gentle intro.

Assuming you are somewhat familiar with the scriptures I suppose the big question is what did you expect when heading into, presumably modern re-imaginings in English, sacred histories, theology, philosophy and scripture from ~3rd century BCE to 3rd century CE? Is the entire period of literature insane in your reading or just the few scraps that made into the protestant canon that stand out, or…?

  • Be careful out there.

My ex claimed to be super into retro gaming and I even spent while putting together a nice setup so she, and me, could play on the couch like in the TV show Home & Away.

But it was all lies. All she was interested in was sex, drugs, rock & roll, and Netflix shows about complete wankers.

Thankfully her son smashed up his ps4 in a ragequit and then spent several months addicted to old retro games until he got a new one.

  • Much of the ‘historical Jesus’ movements especially since the 1970’s or so, and especially in the USA, often a little strange ime, no one knows and it’s fine.

FC Baur > Ernest Renan > Joseph Smith > Bart Ehrman kinda line…evangelical adult Jesus nerds hoping something in the 27 book NT can be clung to but struggling with magical women from Eve to Mary being core. It’s been big business in the US over the past 50yrs or so with the SBL evangelizing Markan Priority and seven letters of St Saul and all those bible schools trying really hard to ignore anything not in the little 66 book KJV’s for lolz.

Jesus of Nazareth is far from verified afaiu.

He pops up in Marcion’s New Testament ~140CE and peeps not sure if the christos is flesh or not there and the discussion around this issue hasn’t really gone away despite burning rather a lot of people and books mentioning it since…the wiki article you cite suggests dismissing them as ‘fringe’ or ‘radical’ instead of burning or screaming heretic. Prior to ~140CE is anyone’s guess and why those defending their Chistology be it Islam, Tewahedo or SBL say “Most of our scholars agree xyz” instead of providing any evidence.

This seems like St Paul: why?

Why would the noble St Mark do what we accuse St Marcion of? We can trust St Mark as he’s the bro-science Jesus evangelist

Good scholars often don’t comment upon this stuff as there is little worth saying but Michael Penn gives a little insight into the weird world of ‘the historical Jesus’ in NT scholarship here.

  • The witch hunt vibes seems apt, the maleficarum got really grim in the wake of the printing press and we’ve got new meme makers now and the pitchforks are being sharpened.

The article kinda hits it home, it’s generic hysterical slop and a solid treatment of the matter will likely be available to the public for £300 from an academic press in a year or three if they promise not to share it. Then an llm will eat it and I will be able to get a summary, mixed in with lemmy comments, for my daily token ration from China: the circle of life.

Afaiu it’s somewhat easier to wreck the book and one would imagine there’s a few books cutting about that whilst not yet fully digital are also not on the endangered species list.

Sharing the knowledge for the greater good is a no go I think, especially in the USA. Me or you can do it on slsk but if a rich corp tries to do it they’ll get shafted fast & hard and the massive academic presses will not tolerate upskilling the poor.

  • The old testament is brutal, maybe ease off the apologetics trying to sell some ‘the bible is nice’ if you squint meme, we even get into genocidal rape territory and having sex with your slaves is just how they roll in texts trying to sound old and brutal.

There is nothing to indicate ‘the bible’ had any impact at all on life prior to 300BCE or so afaiu, it really kicks in around the Hasmonean period as novel sacred history which was high fashion. You’d be as well reading the Qur’an or Geoffrey of Monmouth for history.

The concern here is more you seem to be running with a OT like a history book: Torah, prophets, Ezra, Nehemiah etc isn’t history and the oldest sources we have are Hasmonean era when Torah observance pops up in the archaeological record.

Early Christians often don’t seem overly concerned about the flesh, outwith liturgy, and reports indicate slaves, kids and women were a big part of the movement…Gregory of Nyssa in the 4th century one of the first to really break down the insanity of the practice but his mariology wouldn’t go viral in the west like the horrors of Augustine, Aquinas, Calvin etc.

In the western tradition it’s not really properly deconstructed until Jefferey Bentham or so when Aquinas’s homophobia was getting a kicking too.
