In other longer articles you find out that it’s nowhere nearly a billion. The Solar Farms used to underpin the investments do exist and are productive. They have value in the hundreds of millions of pounds, but its apparently not quite enough to satisfy all of the bonds when they come do in 2025 and 2026.
This article points the finger almost exclusively at Liam Kavanagh and almost ignores Sean Clark, Thurrock’s Finance Director.
A bit of digging turned up this much longer article published a year ago and while Liam Kavanagh and his companies feature in it there’s also quite a bit more about Sean Clark’s role in all this.
The fediverse has a very high percentage of users who are FOSS zealots. These people would rather drink rancid gnu piss from Richard Stallman’s sweaty jock strap than deal with commercialized software. After you’ve been around them long enough (1996 in my case) you learn to tune them out.

There isn’t one and there’s plenty of anti-NATO / anti-western / anti-capitalist sentiment here on lemmy.world.

Obviously not, we’re still federated with lemmygrad and lemmy.ml.
Feel free to do what you feel is best for yourself but I think this situation with hexbear is being blown way out of proportion, mostly by people who seem to have a vested interest in that instance being able to participate here but not the other way around.
The block user button is right there, feel free to use it. I won’t block you though because I don’t melt when I meet someone with a different opinion.

They aren’t and they aren’t even being prevented from doing it on this very instance. There’s pleny of anti-western and anti-capitalist sentiment in here, particularly from lemmy.ml and lemmygrad.ml. My take away on this is that the Admins are defederating from hexbear due to their stated plan to propagandize the shit out of every instance in the fediverse. Who wants to deal with a coordinated army of tankies coming from another instance?

Bah. There’s plenty of users in here from Lemmy.ml, lemmygrad.ml, and other leftists instances. It’s quite clear that the lemmy.world is pretty darn open ideologically. Hexbear is getting ban hammered because they’ve made it very clear that they aim to misbehave.
Absolutely mindblowing that this instance ever pretended it was going to play nicely with socialists.
There’s folks from lemmygrad.ml and lemmy.ml all over in here which is empirical proof that lemmy.world will “play nice” with Socialists. They’ll even play nice with Communists. What they’re objecting too is the Tankie Army assembling over at hexbear and their stated intention of propagandizing every instance in the fediverse.
If you don’t like it that’s cool. Spin up an account on another instance and go on with your day. This isn’t your instance and no one here owes you anything.

The brave Comrades at lemmygrad.ml are blocking about as many instances as lemmy.world and lemmy.ml itself isn’t much different.

That’s more spin than a washing machine! I’d say they’re defederating as they don’t want to battle an Army of Tankies all day every day because it’s exhausting. Sure, I don’t think anyone is really arguing against that. However when you’re against NATO right now when most, if not all, of its members are currently helping Ukraine against Russia and you are coming from an over-the-top Communist instance like hexbear it looks like nothing more than Tankies being Tankies.
I’m some sort of Classical / Moderate Liberal and occasionally “talk against” NATO but there’s a wide difference between that and actively pushing to see it disbanded which is tantamount to Pro-Russian propaganda…especially right now.
If you can’t handle a rule preventing you from trying to remove a bastion of Western European freedom then I guess you’ll move to a new instance.
Impossible to answer as laws vary by country so what may be legal in the US may be illegal in Finland where LW is. Aside from the multi-national difficulties involved there’s also the fact that there’s been near zero court cases on it anywhere in the world (that I know of). Legal Lightening is going to strike some instance somewhere in the world eventually but no instance owner wants it to be them.
