I’ve done that kind of thing a few times myself - my wife says something innocuous, and I read into it until I’ve gone completely off the rails. Has nothing to do with anything she’s done, it’s all to do with me misreading what’s happening and forecasting wrong without checking anything. That’s the joke.

In the interest of addressing stereotypes - I’m Midwestern, and “don’t drink the water!” is still something associated with Mexico in my head. No, it’s about them wanting other people to do good things, and trying to encourage that by example. And I think they have a point - it’s hard to model a behavior when nobody is aware of it, and it’s hard to normalize a behavior nobody talks about

Nah, if a cop charges her for that, she’d be right to contest it. Maybe it had fallen, and she tucked it in her lap to let her get safely clear of traffic before stowing it properly. Doesn’t matter if it’s likely or not, the burden of proof is on the accuser, and it’s not met here.

The fine was for use of a phone while driving, when the phone was not in use. Not for having unsecured items in the vehicle. Not saying it’s a good idea to drive that way - it’s pretty clearly not - but that’s not the actual issue here

Her phone was face down, she wasn’t looking at it that we can see. All we know here is her hands were on the wheel, she was in her lane, and she wasn’t looking at her phone right then. Anything else is speculation without evidence.

Isn’t this exactly what a jury of your peers is intended for? So people - the members of the affected community - can decide who is and isn’t a thief, after ensuring they’re provided with all the facts of the case?

The difference is that the data centers aren’t part of the community. They’re invasive, coming in to steal the water and power and spoil the area with heat and noise. The locals have no say or control over them.

Turning a blind eye towards damage done to them is a form of self defense.
